An accomplished listee, Dr. Mixson celebrates many years' experience in her professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes she has accrued in her field. For more than 35 years, Dr. Mixson served her students and the academic communities as an esteemed teacher and higher education administrator. A talented student, she graduated as valedictorian from grade school, junior high school, and senior high school. She aspired to become a teacher for as long as she could remember. She initially earned a Bachelor of Science from Troy State University and a Master of Science from Auburn University. In 1972, Dr. Mixson graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy at Florida State University before pursuing postdoctoral coursework at Troy University and the University of Southern Mississippi.

From 1959 until 1966, Dr. Mixson taught English at Dothan High School, departing to become an English teacher at Enterprise State Community College. She was named English department chairperson in 1968. She remained at Enterprise State Community College until 1982, at which point she accepted a role as an English teacher and an assistant academic dean at Wallace State Community College. Dr. Mixson was appointed as the academic dean of the aforementioned College in the following year, a post she held until her retirement in 1996.

In addition to her exemplary work in the classroom, Dr. Mixson has excelled as a coordinator and a member of the Advisory Board for the Alabama Community College System Professional Development Task Force as well as the Auburn University Caroline Marshall Draughon Center for the Arts & Humanities. She further flourished as the interim president of both Wallace State Community College and the Alabama Aviation College. As a part of her commitment to a lifelong learning ethos and educational equity for all, Dr. Mixson contributed to the board of directors for the Ozark-Dale County Library, the Alabama Humanities Foundation and the Dothan Kellogg Center at the Alabama Institute for the Deaf and Blind. A lifelong member of the United Methodist Church, she had held leadership positions in all levels of the church.

Dr. Mixson is proud to have received Alumnus Awards from the Auburn University College of Education, Troy University and Florida State University College of Education, and has been presented with accolades for excellence in teaching and leadership from the Alabama Community College System, and Enterprise State Community College, among others. A former member of Auburn University's National Advisory Council and Development Leadership Team, she remains active on the Legacy Giving Council at Troy University, where she established the Dr. Imogene M. Mixson Lifelong Learning and Research Endowment in support of continuing education for faculty/staff members. Since 2004, Dr. Mixson has sponsored more than 20 scholarships and professional development awards at several universities, and she hopes to continue to build a legacy of empowerment through education.
