Drawing upon more than 55 years of professional experience, Dr. Mehta excels as the president and chief executive officer of PBR Laboratories, which offers bio-analytical and contract research services to the pharmaceutical, petrochemical, agriculture, food and environmental industries. Through PBR, he helps develop new technology and products in the areas of food safety, water quality, and environmental monitoring. Currently, Dr. Mehta is working on projects including those regarding the degradation of toxic materials such as cadmium as well as those focusing on the screening of bacterial cultures to eventually help create antibiotics.
Before establishing PBR during the 1980s, Dr. Mehta gained valuable expertise in the field as a research associate with the University of Alberta and an assistant professor of genetics and plant breeding with Rajasthan Agricultural University. Even though his career has been filled with highlights, he is especially proud of his laboratory serving as part of an international group of laboratories that were dedicated to developing genetic toxicology assays utilizing the yeast and in-vitro mammalian cell systems designed to reduce the use of animals in research and testing, which led them to discover that the application of genetics could be used in several other areas. Dr. Mehta retains his professional affiliation with the Society of Toxicology and the American Society of Microbiology in order to remain aware of changes in the field.
In pursuit of a meaningful career, Dr. Mehta earned an undergraduate degree before obtaining a Master of Science in plant breeding and genetics from Rajasthan Agricultural University in 1963. Subsequently, he graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy in genetics from the University of Alberta in 1972. Dr. Mehta later completed a postdoctoral fellowship in microbial and eukaryotic genetics at the University of Guelph.
Driven to contribute to those less fortunate, Dr. Mehta co-founded the Society for the Education and Assistance of Rural Indian Children and the Society of Friends of Nepal. For his professional accomplishments, he has been honored on several occasions, accepting awards through community organizations in Canada, as well as a Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Alberta in 2019. Looking toward the future, Dr. Mehta intends to seek out a business partner so that he can begin transitioning toward a well-deserved retirement.
