Over the years, Jonathan R. Yarowsky has found great success by continually combining his experience and background in different fields so as to build a multi-dimensional practice as an esteemed attorney and partner at the international law firm of Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr LLP since 2013. He is an active member of the Firm's Antitrust Department, while at the same time serving as Co-Chair of the Public Policy and Legislative Affairs Department. In addition, he maintains a robust congressional investigations practice. He has specialized in representing clients on diverse matters, ranging from antitrust and intellectual property to telecommunications, media and constitutional law. He has honed his practice over many years in Washington, serving in both a number of senior federal government positions as well as in the private sector. He is sought out by policymakers, government officials and clients alike for his multi-Branch experience and his deep understanding of how law, policy and the media work together to shape Washington outcomes.
During the early stages of his career, Mr. Yarowsky was a summer law student associate in the Federal Public Defender's Office in Los Angeles as well as working in several private law firms in California. Upon graduation, he joined the law firm of Covington & Burling LLP, in Washington, DC, where he received training in antitrust and appellate litigation.
In 1982, he accepted a position with the U.S. House Judiciary Committee, serving first on the Subcommittee on Economic and Commercial Law as a Majority Counsel. He quickly became Chief Counsel of that Subcommittee, and then later moved on to assume the duties of General Counsel with the U.S. House Judiciary Committee between 1991 to 1995. During that period, he oversaw the operations of six Subcommittees, comprising 40 attorneys, and gained significant expertise in antitrust, intellectual property, telecommunications, constitutional law, civil rights, and immigration law. He also had the opportunity to work closely with officials at the Department of Justice, Federal Trade Commission and the Federal Communications Commission. Mr. Yarowsky also oversaw the Committee's investigative and oversight agenda. Among his other noteworthy accomplishments, Mr. Yarowsky was able to direct the passage of a number of significant antitrust, intellectual property, telecommunications, and civil rights legislation during his tenure.
Following his congressional service, he joined the Clinton Administration as Special Counsel to the President, where he advised on legislative and policy issues, and certain congressional investigations, as well as supervised the selection of federal judges for the President.
Following public service, he joined Patton Boggs LLP, in Washington, where he began to shape a rather singular, multi-dimensional practice, spanning legal, regulatory and public policy work. During this time, he also served as Vice Chair of the Joint Presidential-Congressional Antitrust Modernization Commission. Previously, he had served on the National Commission on Crime in 1995. He regularly gives guest lectures for University and Law School classes on topics ranging from antitrust, a broad range of policy and congressional issues, and Leadership. He is active in a range of organizations, including Cornell University, the Shakespeare Theatre Company and The Phillips Collection.
Mr. Yarowsky was born in Kansas City, Missouri, to father Sol M. Yarowsky, a lawyer and arbitrator, and mother Minna Yarowsky, a psychologist. He is incredibly proud of his origins and upbringing and cites his parents as the ones who created for him a cultural and educational mosaic that afforded him the ability to pursue studies in multiple fields. Happily married to his wife, Lynn, for many years, they first met while they were both students at Cornell, where Lynn was studying psychology with a focus on child development. Together, they are proud parents of their daughter Kimberly, who has a Master's Degree in psychology and works in art therapy with children, and grandparents to three wonderful grandchildren.
Prior to embarking on his professional journey, Mr. Yarowsky showed the same inclination to study multi-disciplinary fields in his advanced education. He received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Michigan, with a double major in Psychology and English, Phi Beta Kappa, summa cum laude, in 1971. He subsequently earned a Master of Science degree in clinical psychology at Cornell University in 1974, followed by a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA) in 1977. While working toward his Master's Degree, he taught at Cornell for two years between 1972 and 1974. During law school at UCLA, he served as Chief Comment Editor for the UCLA Law Review. Mr. Yarowsky has been admitted to practice law by the DC Bar Association.
Recognized by Chambers as a nationwide leader in the field of government, Jonathan R. Yarowsky was recently named as a "Trailblazer" in Government Relations in its inaugural listing by the National Law Journal, for his groundbreaking work in law, regulation and public policy. He was also named to America's Leading Lawyers for Business, The Legal 500 in the United States and as a Top Lobbyist by The Hill for many years.
