"Having the ability to hear is the gateway to communicating with our loved ones and even the grocery store clerk,'' she wrote.
CHICAGO, IL, February 24, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Pintas & Mullins Law Firm, the Chicago-based personal injury firm, has awarded its $2,500 Quality of Life Scholarship to Katarina Falero, a 24-year-old Southern California native, who is pursuing a doctorate in audiology at Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN.
Pintas & Mullins established this scholarship after years of experience working as nursing home abuse attorneys. The firm wanted to inspire young people to consider the ways they could help seniors live better lives.
The scholarship prompt was specifically designed to create that discourse: "What do we owe to the elders in our society to ensure their later life is no less fulfilling than when they were younger? What is one thing that should be done to improve that?"
Ms. Falero focused on how best to communicate with elderly friends and relatives. She noted in her essay that seniors tend to feel isolated as it is. The world is different from when they were young, and they often feel alone even without hearing loss.
"Having the ability to hear is the gateway to communicating with our loved ones and even the grocery store clerk,'' she wrote. Loss of hearing in the elderly is often isolating and can lead to depression.
It's estimated that one-in-six Baby Boomers suffer from hearing loss and only 25% of those people seek help.
Ms. Falero wrote passionately on ways we can help seniors. Strategies as simple as turning down the TV and looking someone in the eye make for better communication. New technology, such as real-time audio-to-text transcription phone applications, can open up worlds for those with hearing loss.
As the U.S. elderly population grows so does the number of incidents of elderly abuse. The New York State Elder Abuse Prevalence Study found that the number of abuse cases may actually be 24 times greater than those reported to authorities. These sorts of numbers have made Pintas & Mullins passionate about protecting seniors and making young people cognizant of how everyone can aid the elderly.
