Dr. Vontver is an esteemed professor emeritus of gynecology and obstetrics, and a former chief of gynecology for the United States Public Health Service in Seattle. In 1964, he accepted a fellowship in reproductive endocrinology at the University of Washington, leading to a four-year residency in obstetrics and gynecology. Dr. Vontver was then invited to junior faculty at the University of Washington. He was board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology and worked at the University of Washington Hospital and Harborview Hospital from 1969 to 1975. From 1975 to 1977 he further flourished as the chief of gynecology at the United States Public Health Service Hospital in Seattle. In 1977 he returned to the university and was appointed director of the new Division of Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology. He ran a successful program as a professor at the University of Washington until 2006, at which point he retired and was granted professor emeritus status. Dr. Vontver additionally held administrative roles in organizations including the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), the Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics, (APGO) and one year as President of the Seattle Gynecological Society. Among his many great professional accomplishments, Dr. Vontver is proud of his contributions to the future of Obstetrics-Gynecology education and training, including WAMI (Washington Alaska Montana Idaho), which was the establishment of a reciprocal tuition program allowing residents of neighboring states who did not have a medical school to enroll at the School of Medicine at the University of Washington, and being a founding member of APGOs Scholars and Leaders program and a board examiner for ACOG. He notably authored "Obstetrics and Gynecology Review," released in updated editions between 1975 and 2003 as well as "Differential Diagnosis Gynecology" in 1984 and "Comprehensive Gynecology Review" in 1989, both in several editions, as well as participating in writing PROLOG (Personal Review of Learning in Ob-Gyn) study guides.
