An accomplished listee, Mrs. Hodge celebrates many years' experience in her professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes her has accrued in her field. Initially pursuing an education at Lycoming College in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, Mrs. Hodge graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in 1958. In 1972, she received a Master of Science in Library Science at Shippensburg University in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania. Mrs. Hodge began her career as a clerk stenographer, a library technician, and then as a librarian at the United States Army War College at Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania, from 1960 to 1980.
Subsequently, Mrs. Hodge excelled as a librarian at the United States Army Military History Institute at Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania from 1980 to 1993. In 1992 and 1993, she organized and executed the 1st and 2nd Conference on African Americans in World War II at Carlisle Barracks; the first conference ever to have been held on this subject. Soon thereafter, she accepted the position of an archivist for the Pennsylvania State Archives in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania from 1993 to 2001. In 2000, she compiled and published the Guide to African American Resources at the Pennsylvania State Archives, which received the MARAC M. Miller Finding Aid Award.
Civically, Mrs. Hodge served on the 250th Anniversary Committee for Cumberland County in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. She also contributed to projects sponsored by the Cumberland County Historical Society such as: African Americans in the Civil War (USCTs and World War II). In light of her exceptional undertakings, Mrs. Hodge was responsible for naming Carlisle's High School for Emma Thompson McGowan, one of Carlisle's earliest African American teachers. It is the only building named for an African American in Carlisle. In addition, as a result of her nominations, the following Pennsylvania State Historical markers were installed and dedicated at the Shrewsberry United Methodist Church, in Shrewsberry, Pennsylvania. And the Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. She was also responsible for saving her two-room elementary school, Second Union in Goochland, Virginia, from being torn down when she informed the pastor that it was a Rosenwald School. It is now a museum and named the Rosenwald Second Union School.
Mrs. Hodge has been a recipient of 40+ awards and honors, some of which are: 2020 Historian of the Year Award, Cumberland County Historical Society, Carlisle, Pennsylvania; Mary McLeod Bethune Award, Association for the Study of African American Life and History; Living Legend Award, Central Baptist Association of Pennsylvania; Angela R. Kyle Outstanding Alumnus Award, Lycoming College, Williamsport, Pennsylvania; Senior Fellow American Society of Freeman Descendants Medal of the United States Colored Troops Institute, Oneonta, New York; Department of the Army achievement Medal for Civilian Service, Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania; Pennsylvania Commission for Women Award; Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission Appreciation Award; Veterans Braintrust Award; Black Women's Historians Award, Association of Black Women Historians; 55th edition of Who's Who in America in 2000.
Mrs. Hodge is a life-member of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (formerly served on its Board), the Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society, and the National Council for Negro Women.
Outside of her primary responsibilities, Mrs. Hodge enjoys collecting African Americana, music (singing, playing piano and organ), traveling, history, and genealogy research. She is very active in her community as well as her church where she founded the library, serves as choir director/organist, deaconess and historian.
