Kathryn L. Edwards, PhD, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Dr. Edwards has been endorsed by Marquis Who's Who as a leader in the field of biology

MOUNT VERNON, OH, March 19, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Kathryn L. Edwards, PhD, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Edwards celebrates many years' experience in her professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes she has accrued in her field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Having accrued more than 40 years of inimitable expertise in the field of biology, Dr. Edwards earned the distinguished title of a professor emerita of biology at Kenyon College in 2017. Hired in 1978 as an assistant professor in the department of biology, she later became a full professor and served as the department chairperson between 1990 and 2017. During the course of her successful academic career, Dr. Edwards was proud to have been involved in a non-major course that she was able to teach on campus called Women's and Gender Studies. She was also fortunate to introduce and teach the very first Introduction to Women's Studies for several years, as well as a course called the Biology of Female Sexuality.

Before her tenure at Kenyon College, Dr. Edwards taught courses at Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida, and was as research associate at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. She was also a visiting faculty member at Washington University, Ohio State University and Case Western University and a visiting researcher at the Jewish Hospital in Saint Louis. Furthermore, Dr. Edwards presided over extensive studies on AIDS in Thailand and Germany.

Specializing in biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, as well as women's and gender studies, Dr. Edwards' early research focused on auxin transport in roots and root gravitropism. She subsequently began focusing on the lowland blackwater rainforest in the northeastern area of Peru. A nutrient-poor area, she aspired to better understand what the distribution of trees looked like, as well as their size and how much they were submerged. She also looked for specific genes during the dry and wet seasons to learn more about how they survive such oxygen deprivation by taking bark samples for DNA. Much of Dr. Edwards' research has been funded through grants from the National Science Foundation and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

Leading several community initiatives in her field, Dr. Edwards was notably the founder and organizer of Women in Plant Physiology between 1984 and 1985. She also formed a group called Witness for Social Justice in Knox County, Ohio, which was comprised of volunteers who sat on trial of abuse cases, took notes and shared their perspective with citizens as to how the county was failing the abuse victims. Shortly thereafter, this group established a court program for children that had to testify in the courtroom by bringing in dogs to sit beside them to help them feel more at ease.

Dr. Edwards obtained a Bachelor of Arts at Oberlin College in 1969. During her senior year, she took an elective course in plant physiology, which later led to a Doctor of Philosophy in botany at the University of North Carolina in 1974. Eminently qualified in her field, Dr. Edwards became certified in permaculture design through Oregon State University in 2017.

Affiliated with several prominent industry organizations as a commitment to her field, Dr. Edwards is a member of the American Society of Plant Physiologists, the American Society of Gravitational and Space Biology, the Biophysical Society, and, among others, the American Cell Biology Association. Dr. Edwards served on the GRE and AP exam boards of the Educational Testing Service from 2009 to 2014. A celebrated Marquis listee, she has been cited in the 47th edition of Who's Who in America and the 17th edition of Who's Who of American Women. Outside of her vocational circles, Dr. Edwards enjoys such diversions as raising dogs, collecting stamps, sailing and gardening.
