Susan M. Collins, PhD, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Collins, PhD, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Collins celebrates many years' experience in her professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes she has accrued in her field. For nearly 40 years, Dr. Collins found success as a teacher, researcher, and archaeologist before retiring in 2010 from the Colorado Historical Society in Denver. As the aforementioned society's state archaeologist for more than 20 years, she also refined her expertise as the deputy state historic preservation officer. An expert in her field, Dr. Collins excelled in settlement patterns and the utilization of space by people in times past.

Dr. Collins formerly flourished with the Pueblo of Zuni in New Mexico as the director of the archaeology program and Colorado State University in Fort Collins as the acting director of the Laboratory of Public Archaeology. She also taught courses at the University of Colorado in Denver and Boulder between 1973 and 1979 in addition to Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, North Carolina between 1975 and 1978. As part of her academic preparation, Dr. Collins worked with the School for Advanced Research, a research center in Santa Fe, New Mexico, as a special researcher between 1972 and 1973.

Dr. Collins pursued an education at the University of Colorado, earning a bachelor's degree, cum laude, in 1969, a master's degree in 1971 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1975. She is also certified as a program director in the state of Colorado. As a seasoned researcher, she has contributed numerous articles in her area of expertise. Dr. Collins also recently reviewed "An Anthropologist's Arrival: A Memoir," a biography of Ruth M. Underhill.

Throughout her career, Dr. Collins has greatly supported archaeology and historic preservation programs in Colorado's local governments and tribes. Having visited and resided in various parts of the U.S. and internationally to conduct her research, she was driven by her determination, hard work and scientific curiosity. Dr. Collins continues to remain active as a very scientifically curious person in her retirement.

Dr. Collins additionally provided her expertise as a member of the Lieutenant Governor's Task Force for Ute Mountain Park at the Ute Indian Reservation between 1990 and 1991. She later participated on the board of directors of the Lamb Spring Archaeological Preserve from 2013 to 2020. As a testament to her commitment in the field, she has been affiliated with the Colorado Council of Professional Archaeologists as the past president and the National Association of State Archaeologists as the former secretary-treasurer and the past president. Dr. Collins is also a member of the Colorado Archaeological Society. She is a member of Sigma Xi, the Science Honorary.

In 2010, Dr. Collins was honored with the C.T. Hurst Award from the Colorado Archaeological Society. She also accepted the Ann Pritzlaff Award from Colorado Preservation, Inc. in 2011, a Colorado Council of Professional Archaeologists fellow designation in 2012 and the annual Hart Award from the Colorado State Archaeologist in 2017. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Collins has been recognized in the 50th edition of Who's Who in America and multiple editions of Who's Who of American Women.
