Having earned the distinguished title of a professor emeritus at Nova Southeastern University after more than 20 years, Dr. McCan reflects on a career defined by the wonderful experiences he shared with students and colleagues. During his years on campus, he had the opportunity to teach and serve as a reading specialist in the university's Abraham S. Fischler College of Education and School of Criminal Justice department of language and literacy. His background in education also included teaching appointments at Hillsdale College as an assistant professor, interim director of the Mary Randall Preschool and the chairperson of early childhood education. Additionally, Dr. McCan held positions at Indiana Vocational-Technical College and Purdue University, as well as with the Indiana public school system.
Some of Dr. McCan's most profound accomplishments in academia have included successfully developing and implementing reading courses to meet the state of Florida's teacher education requirement at Nova Southeastern University. He was also responsible for restructuring and incorporating the masters and doctorate programs to become a single bachelors-through-doctoral program at Nova. As an extension of his scholarly career, which lasted more than 40 years, Dr. McCan has authored various articles in peer reviewed journals, as well as reports and manuscripts. Likewise, he served as a textbook reviewer, and has published numerous works of poetry. Additionally, he has lent his expertise as a presenter in his field.
To pursue his career goals, Dr. McCan earned a Bachelor of Science in physical education with a minor in English at Purdue University in 1974. Shortly thereafter, he transferred to Purdue University, where he received a Master of Science and a Doctor of Philosophy in reading education in 1981 and 1983, respectively. Dr. McCan also completed a clinical educator preparation course through the Florida Department of Education in 2001, as well as Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages and Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative training workshops.
Dr. McCan has been an active member of several key professional organizations. These have included the International Literacy Association, the International Reading Association, the Florida Reading Association and the Florida Association of Teacher of Educators. He is also a member of several honor societies. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. McCan has been featured in editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who in the World.
