Attorney Richard S. Jaffe Becomes a Certified Brain Injury Specialist

New York personal injury lawyer Richard S. Jaffe, who moonlighted for 10 years as an EMT and firefighter, once again proves his penchant for mixing law and medicine.

NEW HYDE PARK, NY, May 13, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- New York attorney Richard S. Jaffe, of the Law Office of Cohen & Jaffe, LLP, has become a Certified Brain Injury Specialist recognized by the Brain Injury Association of America.

The certification involved a rigorous academic program and examination. Before Jaffe could even qualify to take the exam, however, he was required to demonstrate 500 hours of direct contact with brain injury patients.

Having represented the injured people of New York for over 25 years, Jaffe easily satisfied this requirement. In fact, these experiences ultimately inspired him to obtain his CBIS credential.

"The work I had done as a personal injury lawyer often took me into the world of brain injury survivors," Jaffe explained in a blog post announcing his certification. "I began to recognize that these patients suffered from issues that were invisible. They would tell me, 'I can't concentrate. I can't work. I'm a different person—and my children see it. So do my friends. I just can't put my finger on it.'"

Filling in the gaps for clients

In speaking with his brain injury clients, Jaffe discovered that many "old-school" doctors do not diagnose brain injury symptoms. Rather, they attribute their patients' symptoms to the trauma of the accidents that caused their injuries. Patients were often dismissed and left to endure a lifetime of frustration and suffering over their "invisible" injuries.

Things reached a point where Jaffe could no longer ignore the tremendous need gap his clients were facing. When on one occasion, the attorney found himself diagnosing an emergency room physician's traumatic brain injury, he knew he had to do more to properly serve his clients.

So, Jaffe signed up with the Brain Injury Association of New York State, an organization whose training program would enable him to acquire his CBIS credential.

A passion for helping both medically and legally

It's not the first time Jaffe has stepped outside the legal profession to help people in need. For 10 years, while already working as an attorney, he moonlighted as a volunteer Critical Care Emergency Medical Technician (EMT-CC) and firefighter on Long Island.

"Being an attorney sucks out your soul," Jaffe is quoted as saying in the firm's blog post. "I would fill it back up with the volunteer work."

When Jaffe talks about brain injuries, he uses two remarkable words: "invisible" and "insidious." He hopes to use his CBIS credential to help bring light and affirmation to the hardships his clients face––even though these hardships may not be readily apparent.

With the knowledge he has gained and will continue to gain, Jaffe will educate his clients on their injuries, what they can expect on the road ahead, and what they should seek in terms of full compensation for their damages—a financial recovery that accounts for a life of therapy, diagnostic testing, loss of income, and other losses.
