With more than six decades of professional experience to his credit, Dr. Beaton earned the distinguished title of the Augustus Long Professor Emeritus at Boston College in 2005, having previously served as the director of the Center for the Study of Testing Evaluation and Education Policy from 1993 to 1998 and a professor of education between 1990 and 2002. At an earlier stage of his career, he contributed to the Educational Testing Service in Princeton, New Jersey, as the director of research from 1981 until 1991, the director of the division of measurement, statistics and data analytics from 1970 to 1981 and an adviser of statistics and data analysis between 1964 and 1970. At Harvard University, Dr. Beaton served as an IBM research fellow from 1962 until 1964, the director of the statistical laboratory between 1957 and 1962 and the managing director of the Littauer Statistical Laboratory from 1957 to 1959.

In order to prepare for his career, Dr. Beaton obtained a Bachelor of Science in education from the State Teacher's College in Boston in 1955. He continued his academic pursuit at Harvard University, from which he graduated with a Master of Education and a Doctor of Education in 1956 and 1964, respectively. Beyond his primary endeavors, Dr. Beaton was a visiting lecturer at Stanford University, Trinity College of the University of Dublin, Princeton University, Harvard University and Nuffic in the Netherlands.

Dr. Beaton found success with his written works as well, contributing numerous articles to a variety of professional journals. Furthermore, he has co-authored several publications pertaining to psychology and human assessment, as well as on the National Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP). A consultant on election coverage for NBC from 1966 to 1978, Dr. Beaton participated in a validity study panel for the NAEP.

Outside of his primary vocational circles, Dr. Beaton served as the director of data analysis for the Educational Opportunity Survey Study in 1966, the National Longitudinal Study in 1972, the National Assessment of Educational Progress between 1983 and 1990 and the International Mathematics and Science Study from 1996 to 1997. As a further testament to his success and longevity in the field, he was presented with the Wilcoxon Award from Technometrics in 1974, the Senior Scientist Award by the Educational Testing Services in 1987, the Triennial Award for Technical Contribution to Educational Measurement by the National Council on Measurement in Education in 1988 and the Senior Scientist Award from ETS. Likewise, Dr. Beaton was selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who in America and Who's Who in the World.
