ASI designs Hydraulic Cutting Tool, Manufactured by Cellula, for Trash Rack Removal

Developed to cut through trash racks underwater, it has been successfully used for several projects in Canada and the US, benefiting dam and hydropower clients.

STONEY CREEK, ON, June 16, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- ASI Group Ltd. (ASI), a globally recognized company in underwater inspection, maintenance, and repair, alongside Cellula Robotics Ltd. (Cellula), a company specializing in turnkey design and production of subsea robotic systems, have developed a hydraulic saw to cut through trash racks in underwater environments. This newly developed apparatus has already been successfully used for several projects in Canada and the United States, and benefits clients requiring a solution to remove trash racks for rehabilitation or decommissioning purposes.

The hydraulic saw allows for intervention at deep depths of water both safely and economically. The tool is hydraulically powered and controlled remotely via a console on surface. The saw has been designed such that it can be lowered by crane in up to 800 feet of water depth and guided into position using a remotely operated vehicle. The saw has a cutting depth of 5 inches and can travel left to right up to 46 inches, such that multiple bars can be cut at one time. ASI has also developed remote methods to recover the bars to surface after each bar is cut.

The ability to cut trash racks allows clients to gain access to inspect and survey underwater assets, such as low-level outlets, intakes, and penstocks, where the presence of trash racks has made such investigation impossible without costly manned techniques.
