Ms. Dewey has found much success as a freelance artist and sole proprietor of Brookes L. Dewey since 1996. Operating in a freelance capacity for more than 50 years, she specializes in photo realistic watercolors. She also has an affinity for applique, stained glass, silk screen and regular printing, as well as oil painting. Among her career highlights in the arts, Ms. Dewey was fortunate to be featured in Splash 10 and Splash 22.
Besides her primary work as an artist, Ms. Dewey has been a successful entrepreneur as the owner of her beading company, bebedazzeled. She has also worked as a documentation team leader for Tiburon from 1993 to 2005. Moreover, Ms. Dewey worked for several years as an inpatient billing specialist for the hospital administrative staff at Mills Memorial Hospital in San Mateo, California as well as a staff member for a local insurance company.
Ms. Dewey initially pursued an education at the University of California Davis, from which she earned a Bachelor of Art in art practice in 1971. Encouraged to study art by her grandfather, who was an architect, and her father, who worked in construction, she devoted her formative years to learning how to draw and paint. Furthermore, she entered and won several art competitions. Ms. Dewey was also fortunate to have the opportunity to attend a six-week art program under the tutelage of the late Clayton Rippey, a well-known painter, muralist, mosaicist, ceramicist, sculptor and designer who taught at Bakersfield College for more than 30 years.
To better support her profession, Ms. Dewey is an active member of the Northwest Watercolor Society. As a testament to her success, she was celebrated among the Top 200 Artists by the National Artists for the Parks in 1989 and among the Top 100 Artists in 1990. Ms. Dewey was also honored as Best in Show in Reedley, California in 1992 and a Top Watercolor Award at the Allied Artists Exhibition in 2020.
Through her community, Ms. Dewey has been dedicated to helping those in need. She notably donates to various art and charitable organizations and participates in fundraisers. In the coming years, Ms. Dewey plans to continue painting and develop an art all her own that has an inspiring message.
