As a consultant, he answers any clinical or scientific questions pertaining to hemostasis and clinical chemistry.
Prior to his present position, Dr. Mitsios gained valuable expertise in the field of hemostasis laboratory testing as an assistant director of special coagulation for BioReference Laboratories Inc., an assistant professor of pathology and laboratory medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine and assistant director of Point of Care Services and the Central Laboratory of New York Presbyterian Hospital. Dr. Mitsios trained as a clinical chemist at the Washington University, School of Medicine in St. Louis. In addition, he completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of California San Diego, School of Medicine. Before embarking on his professional ventures, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry from Michigan State University. Dr. Mitsios concluded his formal studies with a Master of Science in biochemistry and a PhD in chemistry from the University of Ioannina in Greece.
Due to his outstanding breadth of expertise, Dr. Mitsios has contributed to such published articles as "The antiplatelet and antithrombotic actions of statins," "Mass spectrometric measurement of urinary kyurenine-to-tryptophan ratio in children with and without urinary tract infection," "Evaluation of leukocyte and bacterial interference in point-of-care human chorionic gonadotropin tests" and "Effect of synthetic peptides corresponding to residues 313-332 of the alpha-IIb subunit on platelet activation and fibrinogen binding to alpha-IIb beta-3." Dr. Mitsios has presented at numerous National and International scientific meetings.
In order to remain aware of changes in the field, Dr. Mitsios has been affiliated with the American Association for Clinical Chemistry (AACC), the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH) and the International Society for Laboratory Hematology (ISLH). Alongside his primary work in the field, he is also the chair of the hematology and coagulation division of AACC. For his professional excellence, he was awarded a T32 Training Grant from the National Institutes of Health while a postdoctoral fellow at the University of California San Diego.
