Bruce Strickrott has been Inducted into the Prestigious Marquis Who's Who Biographical Registry

Mr. Strickrott is a Navy veteran, deep sea explorer, ocean engineer, and the chief pilot of the deep submergence vehicle "Alvin" at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Woods Hole, MA.



    WOODS HOLE, MA, August 25, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Bruce Strickrott has been inducted into Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Bruce Strickrott began his career in the United States Navy, serving aboard the USS Horne and USS Fox, from 1986 until his honorable discharge in 1992. After his military service, he completed a bachelor of science degree in ocean engineering from Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, FL, graduating cum laude in 1996.

Subsequently, he joined the deep submergence vehicle Alvin team, at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Woods Hole, MA, working as the submersible's expedition leader. Today Mr. Strickrott continues his 25-year career at WHOI as the Alvin group manager and chief pilot. He has logged over 380 dives in Alvin and participated on over 141 scientific research expeditions aboard Alvin's support ship, the R/V Atlantis. In 2021, Mr. Strickrott is overseeing the completion of a major systems upgrade that will increase Alvin's maximum depth to 6,500 meters (21,325 feet). Mr. Strickrott will lead the first expedition to take Alvin to the new depth in September 2021, diving in the Puerto Rico Trench.

Mr. Strickrott is a sought after guest lecturer, speaking at schools and universities, museums and aquariums, inspiring the public by sharing his underwater experiences in Alvin. Mr. Strickrott and his work with Alvin have been featured in many newspaper and magazine articles including The Boston Globe, The New York Times, Wired Magazine, and Popular Science. He has been the subject of documentary films such as Volcanos of the Deep Sea directed by Stephen Low, Acid Horizon directed by Ivan Hurzeler, and Bruce and Alvin directed by Joshua Seftel. He has appeared on PBS, NBC and BBC television, been featured on NPR radio, and on numerous YouTube video shorts and syndicated podcasts.

In recognition of Mr. Strickrott's contribution to scientific research, a new species of deep sea hagfish, 'eptetretus strickrotti', was named in his honor. He is a member of Tau Beta Pi and Pi Kappa Phi, national engineering and academic honor societies, and has been nominated for membership as a Fellow of The Explorers Club. Mr. Strickrott is a father of two daughters, holds a private airplane pilot license (land and sea), and lives on Cape Cod, MA with Genai Corban.
