She was born in Mt. Kisco, NY. After spending her childhood and young adulthood in Hazleton, Pennsylvania, and Chauncey, Ohio, Ms. Wheeler earned a high school diploma and was married soon afterward. She joined Avon, the multinational cosmetics, skin care, fragrance and personal care company, while expecting her second child in 1956. She has remained with the company ever since, enjoying a 65-year career with Avon.
For much of her career with Avon, Ms. Mains has excelled as one of the company's famed door-to-door salespersons. In addition, she wrote material as part of the "Writers Grooming Writers" book by the Athens Writers Group. Additionally, Ms. Mains has assisted other salespersons and copywriters.
Ms. Mains is a proud member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Athens, where she is a pianist, communications secretary, and personal ministries member. At the church, several of Ms. Mains' own songs are used in worship. She attributes her 65 years of success with Avon to her love of people, and in the coming years, she aims to spend her time enjoying the company of her friends and family members. She enjoys playing the piano and signing alto for singing groups and nursing homes.
Her late husband, Charles was once Officer of the Year at the Athens Police Department and had 26 years as a Communications Officer. Her late son, Loren, was a photojournalist and her daughter Sherry Windland was owner-operator of a flower shop for 26 years. Her daughter Wendy McGee is a registered dietician. Wanda was a bronze winner in the International Library of Poetry contest. Ms. Mains has 6 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren.
