Mr. Church, a retired quality assurance manager since 2008, spent the last nine years of his career with Duff-Norton, having previously worked in the same capacity for B/E Aerospace Inc. from 1997 to 1999. During his professional journey, he notably led Duff-Norton to its ISO 9001 certification in 2000, and was responsible for designing the tools and cams for the screw machine department during his tenure with the organization, which was praised by the company's plant manager as one of the best ever in the United States. Duff-Norton, which is a division of Columbus McKinnon Corp, products include actuators; electromechanical actuators, with capacities that range from 100 pounds to 100 tons; Rotary Union brand joints and provides maintenance and support services throughout the world.
After graduating from college, Mr. Church worked with AlliedSignal Inc. for more than 15 years, beginning in 1981. Hired as a senior manufacturing engineer, he advanced to become a flexible manufacturing system unit coordinator implementing the first Flexible Manufacturing System in Allied-Signal, in 1988, a ISO9001/QS-9000 project coordinator in 1992, and a customer quality engineer between 1996 and 1997. Among his other professional accomplishments, Mr. Church was involved in creating various machine parts with his fellow colleagues for airline companies, some of which were launched into space for satellite technology.
Aside from his primary work in engineering, Mr. Church became a professional shag dancer alongside his wife, Carol. The two have taught classes on cruises, at country clubs and for various private organizations throughout the nation. In 1995 they made a video "Shagging On The Strand" Advanced Shag Steps that is still being sold today. Discovering the dance while in junior high school as a basketball player, Mr. Church was competing for the city championship at the time when he was asked to perform a Valentine Day spotlight dance. A friend of his volunteered to teach him how to shag dance, which sparked his interest in the form. Outside of teaching the dance, Mr. Church is also a past president of the Charlotte Area Shaggers Hall of Fame. He was also named to the National Living Legends of Dance for 2014. In 2019 he was inducted into the Beach Shaggers National Hall Of Fame in North Myrtle Beach, SC.
Mr. Church served for six years in the U.S. Navy Reserve between 1963 and 1969. He later entered college, receiving an Associate of Applied Science in mechanical engineering at Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte, North Carolina, in 1975. He also attained a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in management science at Limestone College in Gaffney, South Carolina, in 1982. Well qualified in his field, Mr. Church is a certified quality auditor and QS-9000 auditor of instructor training through the American Society for Quality.
