G. G. Meredith S. S. Smith Recognized by Marquis Who's Who for Philanthropy

Ms. Smith helps support a renowned environmental center founded by her parents



    SOUTH PORTLAND, ME, September 29, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- G. G. Meredith S. S. Smith has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

With her generous philanthropy, Ms. Smith has helped the state of Maine in the sharing of the Wolfe's Neck Center for Agriculture and the Environment: a demonstration farm, an award-winning campground, and a nonprofit educational center located on four miles of coastline just outside the town of Freeport.

Wolfe's Neck Farm was founded in 1952 by her parents, Lawrence Meredith Clemson Smith and Eleanor Houston Smith, in order to help save Maine's ever-decreasing open spaces. The Smiths were totally dedicated to organic agriculture along with the preservation of open spaces and historic structures as well as assuring that the Maine shoreline would be open to the general public.

Wolfe's Neck Center has spread the organic approach of sustainable agriculture without the use of chemical pesticides and continues today with a renewed mission to help the environment brought on by climate change. The Center also offers the general public recreational activities such as bicycling, kayaking and nature walks that can teach them about raising crops, animal husbandry and workshops such as picking and preparing ingredients, collecting honey from beehives and growing organic vegetables. After L M C Smith's death in 1975, Mrs. Smith gifted Wolfe's Neck Farm to the University of Southern Maine with the approval of their six children, who were co-owners of much of the property. She died in 1987. In 1997, the Wolfe's Neck Farm Foundation, Inc. assumed the farm's continued operation as a community resource.

Ms. Smith obtained a diploma in viola from the New School of Music, in Philadelphia, where she was on the board of the English-Speaking Union. She remains on the Women's Committee of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and was a Board Member of the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath, ME for many years. She has always been active as a Board Member of the Wolfe's Neck Farm Foundation and now, her daughter G. Gouverneur Stevenson Miller, continues.

Ms. Smith was additionally affiliated with the Independence Seaport Museum in Philadelphia, the Chestnut Hill Academy and various other non-profits.
