Dr. Grove is a marine biologist, naturalist and photographer who has led a diverse career for more than 45 years. Today, he continues to work as a freelance marine biologist, biologist, naturalist and marine scientist. Furthermore, he serves as the owner of J.S. Grove Photography, which was established in 1990 in Tavernier, Florida. Dr. Grove also recently began freelancing as a marine science advisor on behalf of the Galapagos Education and Research Alliance at the University of Pennsylvania in 2020.

During his career, Dr. Grove spent over 30 years as a marine biologist with the Charles Darwin Foundation between 1975 and 2011 and over 30 years as a research associate with the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County between 1982 and 2014. He also became affiliated with Eye on the World Inc. in 1986 as both a marine biologist and underwater photographer, and co-founded Zegrahm Expeditions in 1990 as a dive master and naturalist, where he was afforded the opportunity to dive and conduct marine research in some of the most remote areas of the earth's oceans. Dr. Grove's extensive research led him to live and work on the Galapagos Islands in South America off the coast of Ecuador for seven years, followed by many future travels across 100 other countries as a scientific advisor and naturalist.

Apart from his field work, Dr. Grove has lectured frequently on marine biology. Topics have included "Marine Biodiversity and Why it Matters," "The Art and the Science of Fish Watching," and "Ocean Currents and Climate Change." He also co-authored his first book, titled "The Fishes of the Galapagos" with Robert J. Lavenberg, using his doctoral dissertation as its foundation. Published in 1997 by Stanford University Press, the 912-page book serves as a reference for scientists.

From 2010 to 2015, Dr. Grove was active on the Board of Directors of the Seychelles Islands Foundation. Formed as a public trust by the Seychelles government in 1979, it serves as a nonprofit charitable organization that manages and protects the World Heritage Sites of Aldabra and Vallee de Mai.

Dr. Grove received a Bachelor of Arts in marine sciences at Florida Keys Community College in 1972 and a Bachelor of Science in marine biology at the University of West Florida in 1976. Continuing his studies, he earned a Doctor of Philosophy in marine biology at Pacific Western University in 1997. For the past several years Jack has been working on the Second Edition of Fishes of the Galapagos (Grove & Lavenberg, 1997). The new volume will include every species of fish ever recorded from the near shore waters to the abyss and so more than 10,000 feet. The book is slated to be published in 2024.
