While coming of age, Dr. Liao found inspiration through the dedication of his teachers. After earning a bachelor's degree in mining and metallurgical engineering from National Cheng-Kung University at Tainan, he began as a teaching assistant specializing in mining engineering and earth science for his alma mater. Following this accomplishment, Dr. Liao pursued continued education and earned a Master of Science in Mining Engineering from National Cheng-Kung University, where he later served as a lecturer and associate professor in mining and petroleum engineering.
Driven to further his expertise, Dr. Liao immigrated to the United States in 1983 and began additional studies, earning a Master of Science in engineering mechanics and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1988. In the ensuing years, he built upon his skills as a researcher for the Institute of Energy and Resources and the Industrial Technology Research Institute in Taiwan, an associate with Mao & Associates Inc., as a stockbroker for Changhong Securities and as the owner of Microtai Inc. After the turn of the millennium, Dr. Liao began parlaying his expertise to others as an applied geoscience consultant in Sunnyvale, California.
Throughout the course of his career, Dr. Liao has remained dedicated to continuing education, becoming certified in software quality assurance through the Software Advanced Technologies Institute. Additionally, he is well regarded for his scholarly output, having written numerous books in the areas of investing and engineering, including "Investment Psychology," which was authorized for simplified Chinese versions in most Chinese-speaking regions and became the designated textbook for the executive MBA program at the National Taiwan University of Science and Technology. In 2000, "Soil Mechanics and Earthquakes" was also published and recommended as a textbook by the Department of Civil Engineering at Jianguo University.
In order to remain aware of changes in the field, Dr. Liao aligns himself with the American Society of Civil Engineers and the American Association of Individual Investors. Though his career has been suffused with highlights, he is most proud to have written such books as "Black Gold Game" – a historical narrative of oil wars that expounds upon international finance, politics and personal tactics. Due to his vast breadth of expertise, Dr. Liao has been honored on numerous occasions, earning the 2000 Best Finance and Economics Award from Jinshitang Bookstore. In the coming years, he intends to continue focusing on his writing.
