Drawing on more than 40 years of experience, Ms. Cardwell has served as the director of clinical and social services at Hendricks Behavioral Hospital since 2021. In addition to overseeing various inpatient and outpatient group programs, she supervises a large team of recreational therapists, social workers, mental health counselors and psychologists. Ms. Cardwell previously cultivated her administrative expertise as the social services coordinator for Ascension St. Vincent Hospital – Indianapolis and as the clinical director for Center for Children in La Plata, Maryland.
Alongside her primary professional responsibilities, Ms. Cardwell found further success as the co-chair of the Indiana Substance Abuse Task Force and the chairperson of Dearborn County Citizens Against Substance Abuse during the early 1990s. She has also maintained involvement as the secretary of the board of directors for the American Indian Center of Indiana Inc. since 2008. An active affiliate of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) for more than 30 years, Ms. Cardwell was appointed as the chairperson of the legislative committee of the Indiana Chapter of NASW from 1998 until 2012.
In recognition of her accomplishments as a substance abuse counselor, educator and supervisor, Ms. Cardwell was selected as the Indiana Region 7 Social Worker of the Year in 2013 by the Indiana Chapter of NASW. She attributes her success to her acceptance of increasingly challenging opportunities, many of which arose from her vast professional network. In the coming years, Ms. Cardwell intends to continue serving as a mentor to her younger colleagues while preparing for her well-earned retirement.
