Dr. Lewis is a renowned surgical oncologist and molecular biologist who has treated patients as an attending surgeon at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York since 1994. Prior to accepting his current position, he completed a fellowship in the department of surgery at the aforementioned cancer center from 1992 to 1994. Dr. Lewis also served as the chief medical officer of the biotechnology company Antigenics Inc. from 2000 and 2003.
As an entrepreneur, Dr. Lewis has operated as the chairman of Molecular Ninja, a private investment fund in health care, biotechnology, artificial intelligence, and deep machine learning, since 2015. He was additionally active as the chief executive officer and chairman of Samus Therapeutics Inc., a biopharmaceutical company, from 2016 to 2018. He has also acted as the chairman of Dugri Inc., which is devoted to facilitating an emotional support network for health care workers, since 2020 and the chief executive officer for Varian Biopharmaceuticals, a precision oncology company, since 2019. Previously, Dr. Lewis was the chairman, chief executive officer and president of the cancer products company Ziopharm and the chairman of the joint committee of Ziopharm-Intrexon from 2004 to 2015.
As an extension of his work, Dr. Lewis has also excelled in the classroom, during which time he delivered the inaugural lecture of Sir Murray Brennan at Yale University in 2018. He was also recruited as an assistant professor of surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center from 1994 to 1999, a visiting professor at Saint John's College in 2018 and a visiting fellow at Churchill College at the University of Cambridge in 2018. From 1999 to 2001, Dr. Lewis was an associate member at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and a professor at Weill Cornell Medical College.
Dr. Lewis has conducted extensive research in oncogenes, growth factors, signal transduction, immunotherapy, gene therapy and cancer drug development. He has also been involved in several research and clinical trials, through which he was able to further develop his skills to provide better treatment and outcomes for his patients. As a result of his research, he has contributed his wealth of knowledge to a variety of articles published in several scholarly journals as well as chapters for medical books. Dr. Lewis has received two U.S. patents in his areas of expertise.
Engaged in various civic, nonprofit and educational initiatives, Dr. Lewis held the positions of the chairman of the scientific advisory council and a member of the board of trustees and for Hope Funds for Cancer Research. He further dedicated his time and resources as a board member for the Police Organization Providing Peer Assistance with the New York Police Department. Dr. Lewis maintained his involvement as a board member for the Combat Wound Initiative and Limb Salvage Program, which provides personalized and complex wound care through targeted clinical and translational research.
In 1982, Dr. Lewis earned a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa, before beginning his career as a registrar of surgery at their School of Medicine from 1982 to 1987. He subsequently graduated from the prestigious Yale University with a Doctor of Philosophy in 1990. Additionally, Dr. Lewis was active as a postdoctoral associate at the Yale University School of Medicine from 1987 until 1990 before being designated as the chief resident of surgery from 1990 to 1992.
Dr. Lewis was selected as a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the Royal Society of Medicine and the Royal College of Surgeons of England. A former board member for the Yale Biotechnology Society and the Sarcoma Foundation of America, he was also affiliated with the American Society of Hematology, the New York Academy of Sciences, the Society of Surgical Oncology, the Association for Academic Surgery, the American Society for Cell Biology and the American Society of Clinical Oncology. Dr. Lewis was also appointed chairman of Rexie's LLC.
Selected for multiple accolades in his field, Dr. Lewis was recently recognized as a Carnegie fellow of the University of Witwatersrand Faculty of Health Science in 2019 and a Mandela fellow by Africa Health in 2018. He received numerous other fellowships, a Visit of Hope Award from the Sarcoma Foundation of America in 2009, an Outstanding Teacher Award from Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in 1997 and a Young Investigator Award from the American Society of Clinical Oncology in 1994, among other honors. Furthermore, Dr. Lewis was celebrated among America's Top Surgeons and Top Oncologists by Castle Connolly annually from 2000 to 2005.
Dr. Lewis was inspired to enter his respective fields as a result of his love for humanity, biology and mathematics. Among the many highlights of his career, he is incredibly proud to have convinced a hospital and its lawyers to perform a lifesaving eight-hour operation on an immigrant woman with no insurance after she was denied care at another hospital. He believes that this incident was a glowing example of the proper values he hopes to instill within his children, as he fought to show them that the right thing is worth fighting for. Looking toward the future, Dr. Lewis aims to continue being a role model and inspiration for his children and peers.
