Angela M. Chalk Recognized by Marquis Who's Who for Excellence in Community Services

Ms. Chalk has flourished as director of Healthy Community Services, which imparts water management techniques



Dr. Chalk's list of awards and honors include the New Orleans Love Your City Award in 2021, and recognition from the Louisiana State House of Representatives for her work on the climate in 2021.

    NEW ORLEANS, LA, November 30, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Angela M. Chalk has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Dr. Chalk obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communications, with a minor in Public Health, from Dillard University in 2006. Following this accomplishment, she earned a Master of Science in Healthcare Management from the University of New Orleans in 2012. This year, Dr. Chalk completed a Doctor of Health Administration at Virginia University of Lynchburg.

Since 2013, Dr. Chalk has provided her service as the executive director of Healthy Community Services, a nonprofit initiative in New Orleans that provides residents and business owners with an understanding of urban storm water management techniques, as well as knowledge on how the drainage system of New Orleans works. Likewise, they advocate for the general improvement of water quality in Lake Pontchartrain. In addition, Healthy Community Services has worked with the Foundation for Louisiana to address strategies of adaptation among coastal communities that will be affected by climate change and sea level rise. Dr. Chalk has been a guest on many panel discussions as an expert professional on climate resiliency and urban agriculture.

Dr. Chalk retired with the Louisiana Department of Health, New Orleans Regional Medicaid where she was the former outreach coordinator for the Louisiana Children's Health Insurance Program for a 5-Parish area. She also coordinated the outreach efforts for Medicaid Expansion as a result of passage of the Affordable Care Act. Furthermore, she is a former diagnostic breast coordinator with the LSU HSC's LA Breast & Cervical Health Program. Dr. Chalk was a mayoral appointee to the New Orleans Regional AIDS Planning Council, served as a Medicaid liaison to the Department of Housing and Urban Development in New Orleans' "Dedicated to Ending Homeless Program," and was formerly a vice president of the Greater New Orleans chapter of the Dillard University Alumni Association. Currently, she serves as an advisory board member for the American Public Health Association's Center for Climate Health & Equity; American Geo-Physical Union Community Science Fellow, and Eco-America Climate Health Ambassador. Also, she is a former president for the Louisiana Public Health Association.

Dr. Chalk's list of awards and honors include the New Orleans Love Your City Award in 2021, recognition from the Louisiana State House of Representatives for her work on the climate in 2021, a Proclamation from the New Orleans City Council for her work on climate resiliency in 2021, a Dedicated Service Award for 31 years of State civil service in 2018 and a Member of the Year Award from the Louisiana Public Health Association in 2017. Earlier, Dr. Chalk received committee recognition from the LA DHH LaCHIP in 2004. Over the years, she received grants from the Institute for Sustainable Communities, Kresge Foundation, National Audubon Society, Greater New Orleans Foundation, The Foundation for Louisiana, and The Rose Foundation for Communities and the Environment.

Dr. Chalk attributes much of her success to her professors at Dillard University, who helped instill her with self-confidence. She was inspired to enter her current profession by her then 14-year-old great-niece, Anissa Hyde, who told her about her school's flooded playground, which prompted her to attend a seminar on green infrastructure. The area where Dr. Chalk lived had been seriously damaged by Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and she became motivated to establish green communities and spread awareness of urban storm water management methods.

Dr. Chalk is most proud to have testified before the 116th Congress regarding climate equitability. She continues to strive for climate equity solutions for residents of underserved communities.

Other areas of certifications include sustainable agriculture practices from LSU-Southern Agriculture GROW-LA Program; Master Gardener, LSU Agriculture and certified as National Green Infrastructure Practitioner by Enviro-Cert. She is a member of the Master Gardeners of Greater New Orleans, Louisiana Nursery and Landscape Association, Louisiana Native Plant Society, Greater New Orleans Native Plant Initiative, Herb Society of Louisiana, National Herb Society as well as the Louisiana Public Health Association and the American Public Health Association.

Dr. Chalk's hobbies include heirloom seed collecting, cooking Creole cuisine and indigenous basket collecting.
