Mr. Kessi grew up on a dairy farm in Oregon and later accrued valuable experience working in his family's construction and farming business. He additionally developed a passion for real estate when he purchased, remodeled, and leased his first investment property in 1998 while attending University of Portland where he was student body president. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts in finance from the University of Portland in 1999. In the years that followed, he founded and is Chief Executive officer of PHK Construction and PHK Development, commercial construction, and development firms. He was decorated with Excellence in Construction, Best in Class, Best Interior Design and a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum certification for various projects. Mr. Kessi was further honored as one of the city's Top Newsmakers of 2016 by the Daily Journal of Commerce.
PHK Construction specializes in private office, industrial, retail, multifamily as well as commercial public projects. Among the firm's construction projects are various Starbucks buildings, and the renovation of the Historic Timberline Lodge owned by the National Forest Service on Mt. Hood, Oregon. His development projects include LEED Platinum and award-winning projects such as Marvel 29 at the base of Portland's St. Johns Bridge, and nationally recognized 'The Windward' in downtown Lake Oswego, Oregon.
Mr. Kessi's numerous honors include the Daily Journal of Commerce's (DJC) 2017 and 2018 Private Developer of Year. For The Windward, he was presented with the Beautification Award from the Windward-Lake Oswego Chamber of Commerce, The Windward National Merit Award for the Mixed-Use Project Category and The Windward National Gold Nugget Award. For a 2008 high-rise (937) in Portland's Pearl District, he was also celebrated by Street of Dreams for Best Architecture, Best Interior Design and Best Kitchen at the Homer Awards.
Mr. Kessi is a strong believer in community service. He operates on the University of Portland Board of Regents as well as the board of directors for the Home Builders Association of Portland. He is former President of the Scappoose City Council. In the past, he volunteered his time as a basketball coach at De La Salle North Catholic High School Varsity. He currently coaches youth sports in his hometown of Scappoose, Oregon. Additionally, Mr. Kessi serves as a Eucharistic minister and on the finance council of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Scappoose.
He is also affiliated with the Waverley Country Club, the Arlington Club Heritage Foundation and Portland's Entrepreneurs Organization Board where he has served as Board President. Attributing his success to his "core values: which include Honesty (do the right thing), Be Deliberate, Kindness, Humility, Working Hard and Working Smart" as well as his deep faith. He also cites his youthful work on his family's dairy farm, which taught him self-sufficiency and contributed to his drive for business.
