Elwood G. (Woody) Norris Recognized by Marquis Who's Who for Excellence in Electronics and Industrial Design

Mr. Norris has thrived as a serial inventor and industrial designer for more than 50 years



In 2005 the School of Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) selected Mr. Norris for the prestigious Lemelson-MIT Award.

Prior to embarking on his career as an inventor, Mr. Norris excelled as director the Engineering Experiment Station at the University of Washington for greater than 11 years (1959 to 1970). Since becoming an inventor he has invented almost 30 technology products for which he has obtained approximately 100 US patents as well as numerous corresponding international patents. His latest invention, the Bola Wrap is widely used by police and has so far been deployed in over 600 police agencies in the US and nearly 50 other countries around the world.

For more than 50 years, Mr. Norris has found continuous success as an independent inventor of highly advanced electronic and sonic equipment. Among his most prominent inventions are HyperSound, which utilizes the interaction between ultrasonic waves and air to generate highly directional audible sound without the use of conventional speakers., the Flashback Recorder which is widely viewed as the first handheld solid-state record/playback device. It does not use magnetic tape or RAM (volatile Random-Access-Memory) to store sound and/or video. It has been licensed to numerous well-known companies. During the 2000's Mr. Norris garnered acclaim for his invention of an ultralight one-man helicopter known as the AirScooter, featured on the program 60 Minutes. Also a Transcutaneous Doppler, precursor to the Sonogram, a Cordless Microphone, Smoke detector, Piezo electric Spark Plug, an in-the-ear speaker/microphone combination eventually sold to Jabra Corporation, an in the ear AM radio and an in the ear FM radio, a long-play books-on-tape player, a highly accurate GPS device, a stealth Gas Tube Antenna that can be switched on and off, becoming invisible and undetectable at will. Highly desirable on military crafts both land and sea.

In 2005 the School of Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) selected Mr. Norris for the prestigious Lemelson-MIT Award, which is the largest cash prize for inventors in the U.S. Several of his other inventions have been hailed as the "Best of What's New" by Popular Science Magazine plus others. He attributes a great deal of his success to his ability to being able to effectively communicate his ideas to potential business partners. In the coming years, Mr. Norris intends to further develop his current project and in addition pursue a new subject centered around the governing laws that affect gravity.
