DALLAS, TX, March 15, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Crown Council announced Dr. Steven P. Perlman as a new Dental Hall of Fame member. Dr. Perlman, Global Clinical Director & Founder of Special Olympics Special Smiles, has traveled the world to champion the cause of access to care for those with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). The Dental Hall of Fame and its legacy of excellence is awarded each year at the Crown Council Annual Event with the mission to advance the alliance of dentists who have achieved significant success in leadership and community outreach.

"It is our great honor to celebrate Dr. Perlman and his personal commitment to positively impact the oral healthcare of patients with disabilities," said Crown Council Founder Steven J. Anderson. "His example will be followed for generations to come to address the critical need for access to care and make dental care more available for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities all over the world."

On hand to present the award was Ian Rawn, Special Olympics Texas Global Messenger, Health Messenger, and Athlete Leader. "On behalf of Special Olympics and hundreds of thousands of athletes and individuals you have benefited through greater access to dental care over the years, thank you for making a difference in our lives. You are a true Hall of Fame champion in our eyes, and it is my honor to formally induct you into the Dental Hall of Fame, congratulations."

"Since my first meeting with Eunice Kennedy Shriver, she inspired me to devote my life to improving access to healthcare services for people with IDD," Dr. Perlman said. "I've worked with extraordinary people who have enriched my life and everyone's lives they have touched. Yet, there is still so much more that needs to be done. I am deeply humbled and honored to be inducted into the Crown Council's Hall of Fame."

In 1992 Dr. Perlman provided dental services to Rosemary Kennedy – the sister of President John F. Kennedy – who had intellectual disability. Several weeks later he met with Eunice Kennedy Shriver, the founder of Special Olympics. She asked him to create a health program and to oversee the Special Olympics Special Smiles, which provides free dental screenings and comprehensive oral healthcare information to athletes.
