Benjamin Adeeso Awarded the Farmer & Morris Law Overcoming Adversity Scholarship

Adeeso's essay on his struggles with ableism and racism wins the $2,500 award.

"You will realize that you want to be a lawyer so that you may protect those without a voice like how you wish you were protected from these targeted occurrences."

RUTHERFORDTON, NC, March 23, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- "Dear Little Black Boy who stutters…"

So begins Benjamin Adeeso's essay on the struggles he has faced throughout his life. Adeeso writes from his current perspective as a successful, driven Black man with a passion for environmental law, telling his former self that better times are coming.

Adeeso's essay is a stark reminder of why the Farmer & Morris Law Overcoming Adversity Scholarship exists: to uplift those students who have faced difficulties on their path to greatness. As Adeeso reminds his younger self, "You will realize that you want to be a lawyer so that you may protect those without a voice like how you wish you were protected from these targeted occurrences."

From being the butt of insensitive and cruel jokes about his stuttering to feeling forced to "mute" his Blackness, Adeeso paints the picture of his younger self as always minimizing himself in order to fit in. "You find pleasing others is more comfortable than pleasing yourself," he writes.

After graduating from Baylor University, Adeeso is now pursuing a law degree from Texas Tech School of Law. His current plan is to focus on Environmental Law, but those plans may change slightly in the future.

"I am also considering if I want to join the dual degree program at Tech where I can pursue my law degree and a master's in environmental toxicology," he told Farmer & Morris representatives.

As if more proof was needed of Adeeso's ability to overcome hurdles, he has amassed an impressive extracurricular resume as well. He is the Communications Director for the Black Law Students Association at Texas Tech, and he also serves on the Student Recruitment Council.

Farmer & Morris Law is proud to award its $2,500 Overcoming Adversity Scholarship to a young man who has a passionate interest in preserving our world and speaking for those whose voices have been silenced.
