Floyd W. McCoy, PhD, Recognized for Contributions in Geoarchaeology

Dr. McCoy, a pioneer of geoarchaeology, is a professor of geology and oceanography at the University of Hawaii.



In addition to witnessing volcanic eruptions, he witnessed firsthand how a tsunami destroyed the town of Hilo while he was in the third grade.

    KAILUA, HI, April 04, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Floyd W. McCoy, PhD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. With almost 50 years of experience to his credit, Dr. McCoy has served as a professor of geology and oceanography for University of Hawaii at the Windward College campus since 1990. He further contributes to the University of Hawaii on their Honolulu campus as a member of the graduate faculty in geology. Likewise, Dr. McCoy has maintained involvement as a senior research scientist for Associated Scientists at Woods Hole since 1986, where he began as an associate scientist.

Growing up in Hawaii, Dr. McCoy experienced geological phenomena firsthand that inspired him to pursue a professional future in the field of geology. In addition to witnessing volcanic eruptions, he witnessed firsthand how a tsunami destroyed the town of Hilo while he was in the third grade. The realization that a third of his class was missing due to the devastation motivated Dr. McCoy to find answers to his questions about why such natural disasters occur.

After coursework in engineering at Purdue University, Dr. McCoy attended the University of Hawaii, where he received a Bachelor of Science in geology and geological sciences and a Master of Science in volcanology. Subsequently, he obtained a Doctor of Philosophy from Harvard University.

Dr. McCoy considers his greatest career highlight to be serving as a pioneer in the study of geoarchaeology, which combines the fields of geology and archaeology. His work in this space led him to establish a research geoarchaeology laboratory associated with the American School of Classical Studies in Athens, Greece, where he plans to relocate for a year. Featured in 30 different television specials, Dr. McCoy's creative works include authoring six volumes of the "Geological Guidebook to Santorini." Additionally, he has contributed articles to various publications, including the Sunday New York Times.

In accounting for his success, Dr. McCoy attributes his keen interest in the material he researches. His fascination with geoarchaeology has propelled him to reach the professional heights necessary to be accepted among top universities. For his accomplishments in the field, Dr. McCoy was bestowed with the Distinguished Alumnus of the Year Award by the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Hawaii in 2021.
