Dr. Makkar subsequently completed interdisciplinary training in child abuse and neglect at the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine and a general practice residency at Staten Island University Hospital.
Dr. Makkar has been in private practice since 2003 and established PDM Family Dental in 2018, where she excels as the owner until today. In these roles, she ensures that her patients are well while making important decisions for the business. She is a member of the American Dental Association and the Nassau County Dental Association. A trusted voice in her field, Dr. Makkar wrote the Foreword and the Epilogue of the book "Life Interrupted: Dr. Dua's Survival Guide."

She attributes her success to her parents' support and their emphasis on education. Likewise, she considers her husband's unwavering support as integral to her success. In the future, Dr. Makkar intends to make a difference in the field, placing emphasis on dentists caring for their patients by building relationships with patients. She also is a strong advocate for oral cancer screenings and early detections, working tirelessly to help in raising awareness after the loss of her brother, Dr. Manu Dua. She has also co-authored several articles and has received the Denobi Awards 2022 for her contributions to the field of dentistry.
