PORTLAND, OR, April 13, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to honor Jan C. Cavanaugh, PhD, MAC with inclusion in Who's Who in the World. An accomplished listee, Jan C. Cavanaugh, PhD, MAC celebrates many years' experience in her professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes she has accrued in her field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Dr. Cavanaugh's love of art began at an early age. It led her to make art, study its evolution, give lectures on it, write about it, and cross borders. In 2000, her book "Out Looking In: Early Modern Polish Art, 1890-1918" was the very first comprehensive study of the topic to be published in the English language. As such, she laid a foundation for future publications.

Her journey had begun in the mid-1970s, when, after obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in English literature and a Master of Arts in art from the University of California Berkeley, she was awarded a Fulbright grant to study arts in Poland as an exchange student at the University of Warsaw. At that time, the Polish modernist movement in visual art was virtually unknown outside the country. She studied Polish art history and culture and through visits to the national museums she discovered the richness of the Polish visual art tradition.

This experience, along with trips to neighboring Eastern European countries and Russia, inspired her to seek admission to a doctoral program with the aim of specializing in Polish modernism. Following her return to the United States, she continued her formal education and obtained a Doctor of Philosophy in art history from the University of Texas at Austin in 1989. She received several Fulbright/International Research & Exchanges Board grants for dissertation research and later post-doctoral research in Poland.

For several years, Dr. Cavanaugh worked as the Curator for the Reed College Douglas F. Cooley Memorial Art Gallery in Portland, Oregon. Thereafter, she served as an assistant professor at the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa and the University of Missouri at Columbia, where her courses included those on the early 20th-century Russian and Eastern European avant-garde.

As the curator at Reed Collage, Dr. Cavanaugh had overseen the conservation of a number of artworks from the college's permanent collection. She had been fascinated with the process of restoring art objects as well as the physical history of art objects and how much of an impact the changes in their condition over time can have on the interpretation of their content. In 1998, she returned to academe, to Queen's University in Kingston, Canada, where she earned a masters degree in art conservation in 2000.

In 2002, she established Jan Cavanaugh Paintings Conservation Services in Eugene Oregon, while concurrently teaching as an adjunct in the Art History Department at the University of Oregon. She designed a course on the history, varying practices and controversies in the field of art conservation, which was offered annually from 2002 to 2007. She also organized 2 public outreach symposiums on art conservation at the university's art museum. In 2007, she relocated her private practice to Portland, Oregon.

Dr. Cavanaugh has also served as a member of the College Art Association of America, the Society of Historians of Eastern European, Eurasian, and Russian Art and Architecture, the American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works and the Western Association for Art Conservation.
