Stephen M. Wittenberg Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Wittenberg with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Wittenberg celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. With over six decades of expertise in internal medicine and cardiology to his credit, Dr. Wittenberg has garnered renown as an attending cardiologist and educator. Having practiced at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, Massachusetts, since 1974, he has also served as the president of the medical staff and as a trustee of Baystate Health. He has been the co-chair of the hospital ethics committee, and chair of the clinical competence committee for the department of medicine.

As a clinical professor of medicine at Tufts University Medical School and Baystate Medical Center, he spent seven years in academic medicine and rose to become an associate professor of medicine and previously with tenure at SUNY Buffalo.

As a seasoned researcher, Dr. Wittenberg has contributed to approximately 15 scholarly articles in various peer-reviewed medical journals. He also co-authored a book about medical humanism, titled "A Clinician's Companion: A Study Guide to Effective and Humane Patient Care."

Among Dr. Wittenberg's civic interests, he contributes his time and expertise to Volunteers in Medicine, a free clinic in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. He is also an honorary board member of New England Public Media and has been active with New England Public Radio on both the board and the executive committee, as well as on the community engagement committee. Dr. Wittenberg formerly served on the acquisitions committee of the Springfield Museum of Fine Arts and, notably, has lectured several times on the subject of fin de siècle Austrian artists.

Born in Vienna, Dr. Wittenberg came to the U.S. at the age of four and graduated from public high school in New York. Accepted to the prestigious Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, he subsequently graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy in 1957. Following this, he went on to receive a Doctor of Medicine at New York University School of Medicine in 1961 where he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha honor society.

Additional educational pursuits to his credit include an internship and residency in internal medicine at Yale-New Haven Hospital, followed by two years in the U.S. Public Health Service and a fellowship in cardiology at Brigham-Women's Hospital. Well qualified in his field, Dr. Wittenberg is board certified in internal medicine and cardiovascular medicine.

To support his career, Dr. Wittenberg is a professional member of the American Heart Association and an elected fellow of the American College of Physicians and the American College of Cardiology. As a further commemoration of his career, Dr. Wittenberg was named as the Internist of the Year by the Massachusetts chapter of the American College of Physicians, and was honored with the Ralph Gianelly Award for Excellence in Cardiology.
