Prior to embarking on her professional journey, she pursued an education at the Ferris State University, from which she obtained a bachelor's degree in social work in 1999. She continued her academic efforts at the Grand Valley State University, earning a Master of Science in Social Work in 2004. Moreover, Ms. Cannon is certified in diversity, equity and in inclusion in the workplace by the University of South Florida Corporate Training and Professional Education, and is licensed as an eye movement desensitization reprocessing therapist and consultant in training by EMDRIA.
Additionally, Ms. Cannon has been active with the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women's Club Inc., the EMDR International Association, the National Association of Social Work and the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists. She began her career at Clinton Eaton Ingham Community Mental Health Center, where she excelled in multiple roles, including behavioral health social work, as a senior mental health therapist, an outpatient therapist and a case management supervisor from 2007 to 2013. Between 2011 and 2020, Ms. Cannon garnered expertise as a mental health trainer at Nedra Cannon LCSW LLC, while concurrently serving as the owner of another private practice at Wholehearted Living LLC from 2013 to 2017.
Ms. Cannon continued her vocation by contributing to Michigan State University as a contract therapist from 2016 to 2017, and as master of social work field liaison since 2014. Since 2011, she has also found much success as the owner and clinical director at Nedra Cannon and Associates, and as a founder and president of Healers of Color Collaborative of Michigan Inc. since 2020. In this capacity, Ms. Cannon specializes in sexual and racial trauma therapy for marginalized and minority communities, and provides social and emotional support and resources for black, indigenous, people of color and LGBTQIA+ communities. Ms. Cannon's passion for destigmatizing mental illness and marginalized communities, led to the creation of two workshop offerings "Impact of Racial Trauma on Providers" and "Counseling Black Women." Ms. Cannon is the creator of journal prompt card decks, available on Amazon and Vervante "Journal Prompts for Healing, Thriving and Growing as a Person of Color." She has also been a featured Mental Health Expert for a series of PBN- Business Network podcast with celebrity host, KC Armstrong.
Ms. Cannon was inspired to pursue her career path by her family of healers, especially her grandfather, who served as a pastor at one of the largest churches in Lansing.
