Theodore S. Kontopoulos Lauded for Excellence in Law

    CHICAGO, IL, May 03, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Theodore S. Kontopoulos has been included in Marquis Who's Who for his excellence in the legal field. Educational Background: Curiosity and Service

Driven to pursue a career in service to others, Mr. Kontopoulos completed coursework in political science, international relations, and political philosophy at Boston College. During this period, he obtained a Bachelor of Arts, graduated magna cum laude, and earned admission to the Phi Beta Kappa honor society. During undergraduate studies, he co-captained the Fulton Debate Society to the National Debate Tournament, volunteered as a public speaking teacher at Bird Street Community Center in Dorchester, helped several professors publish works with Cornell University and Cambridge University as an undergraduate research fellow, and served as an apprentice to John Attlee in the United Kingdom's House of Lords.

Mr. Kontopoulos subsequently received a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Illinois' College of Law. He again graduated magna cum laude, volunteered at the Daily Bread Soup Kitchen in Champaign, served as an editor on the University of Illinois Law Review, advised the Kennedy for Illinois governor campaign on tax policy, and won the 2018 Rickert Award for excellence in legal writing for both his University of Illinois Law Review publication titled, Fish, Friends, and Flashpoints in the South China Sea as well as for his proposals on reforming the Illinois income tax system. During that time, he also served as head commissioner for the College of Law's Softball League, vice president of the Corporate and Business Law Association, and a research fellow to Professors Jacqueline Ross, Lesley Wexler, Nicola Sharpe, and Margaret Wright where he contributed to various policy projects covering issues within comparative criminal procedure, the laws of war, the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, and antitrust law.

Professional Background: Integrity and Volunteerism

Over the course of his legal career, Mr. Kontopoulos completed various internship experiences, including as a legal and risk management intern with Pacific Coast Producers and as a legal extern with the Internal Revenue Service's (IRS) Large Business & International Division. After working for Deloitte Tax LLP's multistate tax services team, he joined BKD, LLP (FORVIS) in 2019 as an international tax consultant with a focus on tax controversy. Supported by an insatiable desire to learn and serve others, he presently excels within the company as a senior international tax consultant. Since obtaining the role in 2020, Mr. Kontopoulos has provided tax planning, compliance, and controversy services for various taxpayers, including taxpayer representation before the IRS and state departments of revenue.

A licensed attorney through the Supreme Court of Illinois, Mr. Kontopoulos actively volunteers with the Chicago Bar Association's Young Lawyers Section (YLS). He serves on the YLS executive council, in the YLS mentorship program, as a co-editor in-chief for the YLS Journal portion of The Record magazine, as a vice chair on the YLS federal taxation committee, and as a co-chair on the YLS business law transactions committee. In 2020-2021, he was awarded the David C. Hilliard Award for Outstanding Committee Service from the Chicago Bar Association.

While his career has been filled with personal highlights and achievements, Mr. Kontopoulos is most proud to serve his community through publications, speeches, and advocacy. He is happy to have published more than 10 articles before turning age 30 (he is presently 29 years old) that simplify complex concepts and theories into plain English. Mr. Kontopoulos also frequently speaks about tax policy, international relations, and professional development with various organizations and outlets, including the New Viet Nam Studies Initiative, the Chicago Public Library, the Illinois CPA Society, the Chicago Bar Association, and the Simply Tax podcast. Likewise, he enjoys advocating for various clients professionally by facilitating justice between taxpayers and federal, state, and foreign governments, as well as personally by representing low-income individuals in petitioning for criminal record relief, setting up powers of attorney, and more. Looking toward the future, Mr. Kontopoulos intends to continue providing trustworthy tax services and to serving the public through volunteerism.
