WASHINGTON, DC, May 12, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Gholam K. Motamedi, MD, has been recognized as a 2022 Castle Connolly Top Doctor — the seventh year in a row he has received the Top Doctor honor. Only about 7 percent of the nation's licensed physicians are selected as Castle Connolly Top Doctors in their regions for their specialties.

A neurologist with MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, Dr. Motamedi leads — and along with his colleagues, helped to establish — the hospital's Comprehensive Epilepsy Center, a major regional program recognized for handling the most critical epilepsy surgery cases, and its Epilepsy Research Center.

He also serves as a professor of neurology at Georgetown University School of Medicine.

In addition to evaluating and treating seizure disorders, Dr. Motamedi cares for patients with sleep disorders — sometimes at the same time.

"Since seizures (epilepsy) and sleep disorders are both common conditions, they may overlap quite often," he explains. "Further, lack of sleep or low-quality sleep — like what we see in patients with sleep apnea — may be a trigger for seizures. Therefore, treating both conditions when applicable is of critical value in controlling both conditions."

Board certified in clinical neurophysiology, neurology, epilepsy, and sleep medicine, Dr. Motamedi joined Georgetown's faculty in 2001.

His additional accomplishments have included establishing the hospital's Epilepsy Monitoring Unit and Epilepsy Surgery Program, and establishing and leading the medical school's Clinical Neurophysiology Fellowship Program.

Countless people have benefitted from Dr. Motamedi's experience and expertise, as well as his contributions to both patient care and research.

"The ultimate wish of any doctor is to be able to help his or her patients live healthier lives and have a better quality of life," he says. "As academic physicians, we also take pride in training the new generation of doctors and specialists, as well as in furthering the science through research and new discoveries."

Top Doctors are nominated by peer physicians and selected by the physician-led Castle Connolly research team.

"It is an honor to have won the confidence of my esteemed colleagues for such a prestigious recognition," Dr. Motamedi says.

Dr. Motamedi earned his medical degree from the Tehran University of Medical Sciences in Iran. He completed a neurology residency at Baylor College of Medicine Affiliated Hospitals, as well as a three-year fellowship in clinical neurophysiology and epilepsy at Johns Hopkins Hospital.
