HERMITAGE, TN, June 16, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- James W. Anderson, MD, is a distinguished biographee of Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are chosen from among a pool of the most prominent professionals and are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Inspired to a career in medicine by his mother, Georgia Lee Whittaker, who was a highly respected nurse, Dr. Anderson has also been greatly driven by his Christian faith, feeling that he was called to be a doctor. He embarked upon his studies at West Virginia University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in 1958, before obtaining a Doctor of Medicine from Northwestern University in 1961. Drawn to helping individuals with diabetes while he was in medical school, he completed an internship at the Presbyterian Medical Center in Denver and a residency at the Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research in Minnesota. His interest in diabetes eventually led to his work in obesity medicine, and he capped off his studies with a Master of Science from the Mayo Foundation in 1965.

Subsequently joining the U.S. Army, where he rose to the rank of captain by 1968, Dr. Anderson excelled under the mentorship of Dr. Robert Herman, one of the leaders in nutrition research at the time. He credits the skills taught to him by Dr. Herman to be responsible for much of the success he has enjoyed throughout his career. After leaving the Army, he joined the University of California San Francisco, serving as an assistant professor of medicine from 1968 to 1973. In 1973, he joined the College of Medicine at the University of Kentucky, where he was instrumental in opening a new 10-bed Veterans Affairs hospital ward.

While he has retired as a physician, Dr. Anderson remains active as a professor of medicine and clinical nutrition at the University of Kentucky. He has also served as the founder and president of the HCF Nutrition Research Foundation since 1979. Over the years, he spent time as a program medical adviser with Health Management Resources, where he worked alongside the founder, Dr. Lawrence Stifler, who has since become a close personal friend.

Alongside his primary career responsibilities, Dr. Anderson is a prolific author. He has lectured in nearly 50 countries, has had over 3,000 print or electronic reports on his research over the last 20 years, and authored 15 popular books. Some of his published works include "Diabetes: A Practical Guide to Healthy Living" in 1980, "Dr. Anderson's High Fiber Fitness Plan" in 1994, "Dr. Anderson's Antioxidant Anti-Aging" in 1996 and "The Simple Diet: A Doctor's Science-Based Plan" in 2012. More recently, he had a paper on Alzheimer's disease published in 2019, and he is presently writing his autobiography.

To remain abreast of developments in his field, Dr. Anderson has maintained affiliation with a number of professional organizations. These include the American Society for Clinical Nutrition, the American College of Physicians, the American College of Nutrition and the Obesity Research Network, where he notably serves as founder and chairman. Furthermore, he has been active with a number of major medical journals, serving as a reviewer for roughly 12 journals, and as a member of the editorial boards for Vegetarian Nutrition; Diabetes Self-Management; Prevention Magazine; Medicine, Exercise, Nutrition & Health; and the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Active in his community as well, Dr. Anderson has been involved in charitable work through his local churches throughout his career. Since 1974, he has been a deacon and Sunday school teacher with his local Baptist church, and he has gone on five foreign missions, as well as serving as a volunteer physician with the Mission Lexington Medical Clinic from 2007 to 2011 and with the Salvation Army Clinic from 2000 to 2008. He has donated considerable time to Feed the Children and to hosting homeless individuals every Monday and providing them with food and a place to sleep. Striving to donate a full 10th of his income to charity, he was particularly impacted when the Saturday Evening Post asked to interview him about his contributions and volunteer work, noting that he had not truly realized the full impact of his contributions until then.

For excellence in his career, Dr. Anderson has been the recipient of a number of honors and accolades. Notably, he has been elected as a fellow of both the American College of Physicians and the American College of Nutrition. Likewise, he has been presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award, the Marquis Who's Who Humanitarian Award, and named a Marquis Who's Who Top Professional. Above all these recognitions, Dr. Anderson considers the most gratifying part of his career to be the joy he gets from partnering with some of the best medical nutrition doctors in the world.
