James S. Kaplan, Esq., Recognized for Dedication to the Field of Legal Service

Mr. Kaplan serves as a founding partner of Greenberg & Kaplan LLP

NEW ROCHELLE, NY, June 17, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- James Kaplan has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Drawing upon more than four decades of experience in his chosen field, Mr. Kaplan has distinguished himself as one of the founding partners at Greenberg & Kaplan LLP, a boutique law firm that prides itself on offering its clients excellent, cost-effective legal services in the areas of taxation, estate and guardianships and has tried a number of cases involving tax, estates and guardianship law. Prior to the establishment of his firm, on July 1st 2014, he was the head of the Tax and Estates department at Herzfeld & Rubin, P.C., a midsize Wall Street law firm. His practice there specialized in tax, estate, employee benefits and guardianship for a diverse array of domestic and international clients. Demonstrating proficiency in all aspects of his profession, he has handled probates for large and small estates of between 100 thousand dollars and 100 million dollars including estates involving overseas properties in France, Israel and Germany that involved questions of both U.S. and foreign law. Likewise, Mr. Kaplan has represented clients in matters concerning the Internal Revenue Service, secured exemptions for nonprofit organizations and represented the City of New York in tax and employee benefits law, among other accomplishments.

Before working with Herzfeld & Rubin, Mr. Kaplan served as the Consulting Special Tax counsel to the New York City Law Department from 1985 to 1997, in connection with which he advised the City Government on matters involving federal taxation. In this role, he provided his counsel on real estate projects and tax exempt financings in excess of tens of billions of dollars. He also filed claims for refunds of social security taxes that secured over $750 million on behalf of the City and its employees. During this time, Mr. Kaplan served of counsel at Ashinoff, Ross & Goldman, Siller Wilk, Spector and Scher & Feldman, as well as a partner at Gordon & Kaplan.

During the early stages of his career, Mr. Kaplan was a tax partner at Demov, Morris & Hammerling, having previously functioned as a tax associate with Stroock, Stroock & Lavan and Cahill Gordon & Reindel. He was also an associate for 2 years at Arky Fried, Stearns, Watson and Grier a law firm based in Miami. Well regarded for his subsequent accomplishments, Mr. Kaplan was listed in Super Lawyers for five years and has disseminated his knowledge to others through a variety of articles on taxation and estate law, as well as though lectures and panel talks in relation to his areas of expertise.

Mr. Kaplan was educated at Yale College, from which he received an undergraduate degree in Political Science and Economics, cum laude, in 1971. Following this accomplishment, he served on the Columbia Law Review at Columbia Law School and earned a Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1974. Mr. Kaplan concluded his academic efforts at New York University in 1979, where he received a Master of Laws in taxation. He has been admitted to practice law in the states of New York, New Jersey and Florida.

Outside of his primary career, Mr. Kaplan has earned distinction as an avid historian and walking tour guide in New York City. He is currently the Chairman and the Co-Founder of the Lower Manhattan Historical Association and previously for more than 15 years conducted an all night (from 2 am to 6 am) walking tour of lower Manhattan for the Fraunces Tavern Museum. He is also the President of the National Democratic Club, in which capacity, he was instrumental in the street co-naming of West 46th Street as Frances Perkins Place, in March 2022 named in honor of the U.S. Secretary of Labor under Franklin D. Roosevelt and the first woman to ever serve in a U.S. presidential cabinet, in. Bearing a particular interest in America's lesser-known heroes, Mr. Kaplan has written with great zeal on number of figures from American History such as General Heratio Gates, Marinus Willet and Philip Payton (the founder of Modern Harlem). For his instrumental role in the marking of the previously unmarked grave of General Heratio Gates in Trinity Church Yard he was bestowed a Coin of Excellence from the U.S. Army's Regimental Alumni Association.

In accounting for the recent success of his law firm Greenberg and Kaplan, Mr. Kaplan credits his ability to take risks in representing clients who might otherwise not be able to obtain representation. For this, among many other accomplishments, he presently serves as the head of the Brooklyn Bar Association Tax Committee. Looking toward the future, Mr. Kaplan aspires to expand the scope of his career and build an even more successful law firm. Additionally, he hopes to achieve more widespread recognition for his historical writings many of which have recently appeared in the New York Almanac.
