As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

An expert in medical ultrasound physics, Dr. Zagzebski has served as a dedicated educator and researcher for more than 50 years. To prepare for his career, he earned a Bachelor of Science in physics from St. Mary's College, Winona, MN and a Master of Science in the same area of study from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He subsequently attained a Doctor of Philosophy in radiological sciences from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1972.

Following his educational achievements, Dr. Zagzebski began his career as a postdoctoral research associate for the departments of human oncology and radiology at the University of Wisconsin, and was later selected as a faculty member. He was promoted to a full professorship in 1986. His research group is well known for pioneering work on ultrasound tissue-mimicking phantoms, which are used for training, performance testing and quality control of ultrasound scanners. The group has also developed procedures for measuring ultrasound scattering and attenuation properties of tissue, methods which can be incorporated in clinical equipment. Dr. Zagzebski has co-authored over 170 peer reviewed scientific publications and 21 book chapters, and he has served as co-author or editor of 6 books dealing with aspects of medical ultrasound.

Dr. Zagzebski served as chair of the department of medical physics at the University of Wisconsin's School of Medicine and Public Health from 1998 to 2013, whereupon he was bestowed with the distinguished title of professor emeritus. Furthermore, from 2007 to 2015, he worked with the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee as an adjunct professor, continuing his teaching in medical ultrasound.

Adjacent to his primary career path, Dr. Zagzebski has been a member of the graduate education program review committee for the Commission for Accreditation of Medical Physics Educational Programs, and he serves on the volume flow committee for the Quantitative Imaging Biomarker Alliance. He has also been a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineering Ultrasonic Society, the American College of Radiology, the International Veterinary Ultrasound Society and the Society of Directors of Academic Medical Physics Programs. Additionally, he served as an advisory board chair for the ultrasound physics exam committee for the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers. He was also honored with a membership on the first scientific advisory council for NIH's National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering.

In recognition of his expertise, Dr. Zagzebski was selected as a fellow, both by the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine and by the American Association of Physicists in Medicine. He served as the latter association's past chair of the general medical physics committee and ultrasound committee. He remains active on technical standards committees in the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine, and he was selected as that organization's William Fry Memorial Lecturer in 2019. Furthermore, Dr. Zagzebski was bestowed with the Best Paper Award from the Journal of Clinical Ultrasound in 1992.

Looking toward the future, Dr. Zagzebski is involved in several research projects and is leading a group tasked with developing methods for testing Doppler ultrasound devices in the American Association of Physicists in Medicine. He intends to finish these projects in the next several years, continuing his role as an educator to help rising professionals in the field.
