Marquis Who's Who Honors Robert E. Zipf Jr., MD, with Inclusion in Who's Who in the World

Dr. Zipf was a prominent medical laboratory director, legal medicine consultant, clinical and forensic pathologist, and educator.

Now retired from the field, Dr. Zipf was a prominent medical laboratory director, legal medicine consultant, clinical and forensic pathologist, and educator for more than four decades. Aligned with Nash General Hospital from 1978 to 2006 as the director of clinical and diagnostic laboratories, he also served as a regional forensic pathologist in North Carolina during those same years. Additionally, Dr. Zipf held the title of president of R.E. Zipf Pathology Associates in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, between 1978 and 2005, a consulting company that specialized in providing services in the areas of medical forensics, laboratory management and laboratory software for a multitude of public and private corporations.

During an earlier stage of his career, Dr. Zipf garnered experience as the director of forensic pathology at Duke University Health System in 1967, where he also served as an assistant professor from 1973 to 1974. He was subsequently recruited as the director of radioisotope pathology at Riverside Methodist Hospital, OhioHealth, in Columbus, Ohio, and as a forensic pathologist for Franklin County, Ohio, in 1974. Additionally, Dr. Zipf served as a clinical assistant professor in the school of medicine at East Carolina University from 1979 to 1989, and as an adjunct professor in the school of medical technology at Atlantic Christian College (now Barton College) and school director between 1980 and 1989 and from 1983 to 1989, respectively.

In addition to practicing medicine and teaching, Dr. Zipf consulted in the areas of medical forensics and laboratory management. As a retired major of the U.S. Air Force who served his country between 1967 and 1974, he also found success as the chief anatomic pathologist and consultant to the surgeon general for the branch. Additionally, Dr. Zipf founded Clintrac Pathology Software and Clintrac Pathology Computers and was recognized as the vice president of Computerized Office Systems from 1986 to 2000.

Enjoying many career highlights, Dr. Zipf was responsible for establishing a medical examiner system to be overseen by pathology residents, converting a county coroner's system into a medical examiner's system, and assisting in the design and installation of some of the earliest laboratory information systems. As a seasoned researcher, he also contributed numerous articles to scholarly journals.

In retirement, Dr. Zipf continues to remain involved in health care education and general higher education. He has sat on the board of directors of the Nash Community College since 2015, the North Carolina Department of Justice forensic advisory board since 2012, and the North Carolina Wesleyan College board of trustees since 2005. He is also an active member of the Nash Chamber of Commerce since 2005 and continues to serve as an advisor for the Zipf Charitable Trust and Fund since 1999. Among other roles, Dr. Zipf continues to support of the Boy Scouts of America as an Eagle Scout leader.

Inspired to pursue medicine by his late father, who was a physician, Dr. Zipf became interested in general medicine and subsequently developed a passion for hospital pathology. After earning a Bachelor of Arts at DePauw University in 1962, he achieved a Doctor of Medicine at The Ohio State University in 1966. Additional educational pursuits to his credit include an internship at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, Ohio, followed by additional training in pathology at Duke University Health Systems. Dr. Zipf is board certified in pathology.

To remain aware of changes in the medical field, Dr. Zipf has been a member of several industry-related organizations, including the Nash County Medical Society, the Association of Clinical Scientists, the American College of Nuclear Medicine, and the North Carolina Medical Society. He has also been recognized as a fellow of the College of American Pathologists, the American Academy of Forensic Sciences, and the American Society for Clinical Pathology and is a past president of the Nash County Medical Society.

Dr. Zipf was recognized in 2021 by North Carolina Wesleyan College with an Honor for Service. The college notably named its learning center, The Zipf Learning Center, after his family in 2021. He also received the President's Cup for Services by Nash Community College in 2019. During an earlier stage of his career, Dr. Zipf became recognized as an Eagle Scout honoree of the Boy Scouts of America.
