Brite LED Lighting Delivers LED Cobra Street Lighting to Puerto Rico to Improve Energy Efficiency Across the Island

Brite LED Lighting completes successful delivery of LED street lights to help PREPA, the public corporation of the Government of Puerto Rico operated electric utility reduce energy cost across the island.

MIAMI, FL, September 02, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Brite LED, a Miami-based wholesaler for commercial and industrial LED lighting announced that it was awarded and has provided the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (PREPA), with the latest LED roadway lighting to convert HID streetlights to energy efficient LED lighting. The multimillion-dollar retrofit project modernizes streetlights and is designed to help enhance roadway lighting, lower energy costs and improve quality of life in neighborhoods throughout the island.

The first phase of the project includes over 25,000 street and roadway lights which will replace the existing HID lights. The new LED lights illuminate highways and various roads throughout the island and improve safety and quality-of-life in neighborhoods while reducing carbon emissions. "The LED cobra style streetlights are slightly more expensive to procure, however with the high energy cost on the island they quickly pay for themselves in savings and less maintenance cost," explained Marilyn Cortez, CEO for Brite LED Lighting.

The Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority, in coordination with several local contracting companies, has launched a major initiative to upgrade street lighting to more reliable and higher-quality lighting. The LED lighting retrofit project will be the largest municipal lighting modernization in the country's history. The retrofit project will save about 50 percent on energy costs compared to conventional high-pressure sodium lighting. The project also underlines the importance of lowering the world's carbon footprint which will negatively affect coastal areas as sea levels rise.

When the electrical infrastructure was rebuilt after Hurricane Maria devastated the island in 2017, the Puerto Rican Power Authority sought to improve safety and across the island by replacing nearly all the country's outdated and inefficient lamps, many still damaged by the hurricane. The retrofit process has been slow, but it is getting completed by approved contractors based in Puerto Rico.

"We have a built a solid reputation for delivering high-quality LED lighting at very competitive pricing and as we are based in Miami the project was a natural fit for us," stated Cortez. "As part of our agreement, we custom labeled all the LED to make them easier to identify and service."

Currently, Puerto Rico's streetlights are outfitted with high-pressure sodium (HPS) bulbs, which have a lifespan of between 20,000 to 25,000 hours. LEDs last considerably longer, with many fixtures rated to operate for 75,000-plus hours. LEDs use much less energy to provide the same amount of light as conventional gas-based bulbs, thereby offering energy savings of upwards of 50 percent.

"Infrastructure improvements like LED lighting are excellent ways for public and private communities to improve quality of life, reduce energy costs and help meet sustainability goals," said Michael Smith, marketing director for Brite LED.
