Chalik & Chalik Announces 2022 Cancer Survivors Scholarship Winner

    MIAMI, FL, October 14, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Gabrielle Green is the 2022 Chalik & Chalik Cancer Survivors Scholarship winner. Green will receive $1,000 for her Ph.D. nursing education studies at Texas Woman's University. The law firm awards the scholarship annually to a deserving student who aspires to help others after dealing with a critical illness of their own.

While Fighting for Her Life, Aspiring Nursing Educator Seeks to Help Others

Green was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer in 2017. The news was met with tears as she realized her life would permanently change. "Terrified does not even describe the thoughts going through my head. My entire life stopped. I was no longer a wife, a mother, or a nurse. I was a breast cancer patient."

Green credits her husband, Demario, as her biggest inspiration and for helping her endure her cancer battle. He was by her side for nearly a year as she endured aggressive chemotherapy, radiation, and surgeries to fight what doctors told her was possibly Stage 4 breast cancer. Yet, through it all, Green was encouraged to help others, especially when she saw other women facing the same challenges but without the same help she had.

"Although I could utilize several resources through my insurance, I could see firsthand those that could not. At this point, I decided to dedicate my recovery to helping those in need," she said.

Ph.D. Nursing Student Joins Effort to Spread Breast Cancer Awareness in Community

Something had to be done, so Green joined a local nursing organization and helped provide free mammogram screenings to women in her Gulfport, Mississippi, community.

"In addition to screenings, educational seminars were provided to inform women of the free resources available on our site. We celebrated our success in October with a breast cancer program, where I was honored for my hard work and dedication to this cause," she said.

Green, a graduate of the University of Southern Mississippi College of Nursing, wants to help African American breast cancer patients in the Southeastern United States who face tough health battles without adequate health insurance.

"I am determined to understand the barriers to treatment African American women face when diagnosed with breast cancer," she shared in her scholarship essay.

Health and Wellness for All Among Scholarship Recipient's Goals

She also wants to start an organization that promotes education, health and wellness, and mental health care for individuals of all ages.

"The agency will be a place where individuals are taught the importance of education and learn about all aspects of a healthy life," she said. "I hope my organization will provide a place for children and young adults to know how to holistically care for their bodies, minds, and spirits through medical, mental health, and spiritual services."
