Dr. Amoako has earned distinction as the leader of the department of mechanical and industrial engineering at the University of New Haven.

With more than 15 years of excellence to his credit in biomedical engineering, Dr. Amoako has earned distinction as the leader of the department of mechanical and industrial engineering at the University of New Haven. As the interim chair since 2022, he has focused his efforts on researching artificial lung design for patients with end-stage lung disease. He manages a biomedical research laboratory called the biomaterials and medical device innovation lab, supervising and training 10 to 15 students through this program that he established.
As well as his leadership role as the interim chair, Dr. Amoako is the associate professor of biomedical engineering and the founding chair and director of the biomedical engineering graduate program at the university. He also speaks with high school students and students that are underrepresented in engineering to talk to them about biomedical engineering and how they can become part of the field. Additionally, he is a valued member of the American Society for Artificial Internal Organs, the American Chemical Society, the Biomedical Engineering Society and the Society for Biomaterials.
Prior to his current role, Dr. Amoako began his career as a postdoctoral research fellow for the University of Michigan in 2012 and then for the University of Washington that same year. In 2013, he returned to the University of Michigan as a postdoctoral fellow. He then became an assistant professor of biomedical engineering for the University of New Haven in 2014. Among his professional accomplishments, he was a recipient of the CT Space Grant Consortium from NASA. He was also inducted into the Alpha Chi Honor Society.
Prior to embarking on his professional journey, Dr. Amoako earned a Bachelor of Science in physics and mathematics from Delaware State University in 2004 and a Master of Science in Engineering in mechanical engineering from the University of Michigan College of Engineering in 2006. He then attained a Doctor of Philosophy in biomedical engineering from the same institution in 2011.
Looking to the future, Dr. Amoako intends to attain a grant that will allow him to train students better. He also aims to have a medical device design fabrication and testing program that will train students in this area of research, allowing them to interact with a larger number of biomedical companies and biomedical programs while attracting more students to the field. He is dedicated to giving everything he does in his profession to contribute to society.
