While studying history and astronomy as a student in his native Germany, Dr. Michael Wiescher developed an interest in physics. He graduated with a BS in metaphysics in 1972, followed by a diploma in solid state physics in 1975 and a PhD in nuclear physics, summa cum laude, in 1980 from the University of Muenster. After receiving his doctorate, he began his career in academia and has since served several universities. Currently, he excels as the Frank M. Freimann Professor of Physics and director of the Nuclear Science Laboratory at the University of Notre Dame. His research interests include the study of nuclear reactions relative to the understanding of energy production and the origin of celestial elements.
