HARTSDALE, NY, January 25, 2023 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Bennie W. Chiles III, M.D., has been recognized as a 2023 Castle Connolly Top Doctor in the field of Neurosurgery/Spine Surgery —the fourth consecutive time he has received the prestigious Top Doctor honor. Only about 7 percent of the nation's licensed physicians are selected annually as Castle Connolly Top Doctors in their regions for their specialties.
A neurosurgeon with advanced fellowship training in complex spine surgery, Dr. Chiles is the owner and founder of Westchester Spine and Brain Surgery, PLLC, a multihospital private practice located in the Westchester County, NY, town of Hartsdale. He expertly evaluates and treats a range of conditions in adults related primarily to the spine as well as the brain.
Dr. Chiles has special expertise in treating challenging spine issues, often with advanced surgical techniques such as minimally invasive procedures and intraoperative computer guidance. These issues primarily relate to degenerative diseases of the spine including spinal stenosis and herniated discs, as well as less common pathologies such as traumatic fractures/dislocations, infections, and tumors. He performs advanced spine procedures that include laminectomies, discectomies, spinal fusions, disc decompression, spine stabilization, and artificial-disc placement.
Dr. Chiles was certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery in 2002 and is a Fellow of both the American College of Surgeons and the American Association of Neurological Surgeons. He has been a faculty member in the Department of Neurosurgery at New York Medical College since 1998 and has also been an attending neurosurgeon at Westchester Medical Center since that time. Additionally, he serves as an attending neurosurgeon at White Plains Hospital Center, St. John's Riverside Hospital, New York-Presbyterian Westchester, Montefiore New Rochelle Hospital, and Stamford Hospital in Connecticut.
Dr. Chiles likes to emphasize that one of his fundamental philosophies is that he rarely recommends or offers surgery unless there is clear and compelling evidence to suggest that it is likely to bring significant benefit and there are no reasonable nonsurgical alternatives — since surgery carries risks that must be very carefully considered. However, if surgery is needed, patients can be assured that Dr. Chiles will use state-of-the-art techniques and equipment to maximize the possibility of the safest and best outcome.
Top Doctors are nominated by peer physicians and selected by the physician-led Castle Connolly research team.
When asked to comment on his recognition, Dr. Chiles said, "I am humbled and honored to once again be recognized by Castle Connolly as a Top Doctor in my field. The Castle Connolly name is universally regarded as the premier acknowledgment that physicians can receive for the work we do."
Dr. Chiles earned his medical degree at the internationally renowned University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) School of Medicine in 1991. He completed a seven-year residency in neurological surgery — serving as chief resident the final two years — and a fellowship in complex spine surgery fellowship, all at New York University Medical Center. He holds a bachelor's degree in biological science from Harvard University. He has been consistently honored with consumer recognitions that include New York Magazine's Top Doctors rankings and Vitals Patients' Choice Award.
