Dr. Jacob Kamen Celebrated for Dedication to the Field of Health Physics

Jacob Kamen, PhD channels years of expertise in health physics to his work with New York University, Columbia University and Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai

    BRONX, NY, April 28, 2023 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Jacob Kamen has been included in Marquis Who's Who. Upon earning a Bachelor of Science in Nuclear Engineering from the Polytechnic University in New York City, Dr. Kamen began working as a teaching assistant with Professor Melkonian (who was not only part of the Manhattan Project but also a student of Enrico Fermi) at Columbia University. He spent several years at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) as a research collaborator and received his Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering from Columbia University in 1992. Through his research, he was involved in Neutron Activation Analysis and Monte Carlo calculations for Body Composition and Boron Neutron Capture Therapy project. Subsequently, Dr. Kamen completed his postdoctoral fellowship in the Radiation Oncology Department of University of Florida, Shands Hospital.

He achieved board certification in several areas including: Certified Medical Laser Safety Officer, National Radiation Register Protection Technologist, and American Board of Health Physicist. Dr. Kamen obtained faculty positions at Manhattan College, New York University, and, presently, Professor of Radiology at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. At Mount Sinai, he not only serves as the senior director of radiation safety for the main campus but also as chief radiation and laser safety officer for the largest health care institution in the U.S. Dr. Kamen has been invited to present several times at IAEA conferences in Vienna and London. He has published peer-reviewed academic papers about hospital response to a dirty bomb in congested cities as well as alternative technologies to remove the risk of a dirty bomb. He was interviewed by TV channels during the Fukushima Nuclear Accident and his interview was published in the New York Daily News. In 2017, Dr. Kamen's accomplishments earned him the Health Physics Society Fellow Award. Dr. Kamen is a member of many national and international working groups including CIPAC of homeland security. Dr. Kamen has been featured in videos for US-DOE-NNSA-ORS and LIA.

Driven to stay abreast of changes in the field, he aligns himself with the Health Physics Society. Due to his vast breadth of knowledge, Dr. Kamen has contributed to various articles, including "Reduction in Occupational and Patient Radiation Exposure from Myocardial Perfusion Imaging: Impact of Stress-Only Imaging and High-Efficiency SPECT Camera Technology."

Outside of his work, Dr. Kamen serves as the elected president of the Greater New York Chapter of Health Physics (GNYCHP) and the president of the GNYCHP Executive Council. Looking toward the future, he has been recruiting fresh college graduates and training them to become board certified health physicists. He intends to pass on the knowledge he has gained from his experiences to encourage the continued growth and success of future generations. Ultimately, Dr. Kamen aims to continue parlaying his expansive breadth of knowledge to his students at numerous institutions.
