Leveraging decades of excellence in financial analytical research, Dr. Nan has earned distinction as Brock Family Chair Professor with Purdue University and is the senior associate dean and department head of management. Since 2022, she has focused her efforts on research for banking regulations and accounting disclosures. She engages in a great deal of mentoring and is presently teaching courses as part of the university's Master of Business Administration program.
Prior to her current role, Dr. Nan began her career an assistant professor for the Carnegie Mellon Tepper School of Business in 2004 and joined Purdue University in a similar capacity in 2012. She became an associate professor with tenure in 2015 for the Purdue University Krannert School of Management and served as the accounting area head for the university from 2019 until 2022. In 2020, she was honored as Gerald Lyles Rising Star Professor of Accounting for two years.
Throughout her career, Dr. Nan has published numerous research papers in top journals in her field, including The Accounting Review, the Journal of Accounting Research, the Journal of Accounting and Economics, Management Science and Contemporary Accounting Research. Additionally, she lends her expertise as an editorial board member for the Journal of Management Accounting Research and as an editorial review board member for the journal Production and Operations Management.
Among her professional accomplishments, Dr. Nan was named an Undergraduate Outstanding and Distinguished Instructor in 2019, an MBA Outstanding and Distinguished Instructor for the Krannert School of Management from 2012 through 2022 and a Distinguished Instructor of Online Master's Program in 2021 and 2022, all by Purdue University. She also was honored with a Best Paper Award from The Second Conference of the Overseas Chinese Scholars Association in Management Science and Engineering in China for her paper "Stock Market Pressure on Inventory Investment and Sales Reporting for Publicly Traded Firms," which she co-authored with Guoming Lai and Laurens Debo in 2009. Added to these, she won the Outstanding Management Accounting Paper Award from the American Accounting Association Annual Meeting the same year. She was ranked the #2 Top Analytical Author by Financial Analytical Research in 2019 and 2020. She was also listed in the Top 10 Analytical Authors in the Accounting Research Rankings by Brigham Young University from 2019 through 2022.
While developing her professional journey, Dr. Nan earned a Bachelor of Engineering from Tianjin University in China and a Master of Arts in economics from West Virginia University. Following these achievements, she attained a Doctor of Philosophy in accounting from the University of Florida.
Looking to the future, Dr. Nan intends to grow further in her role with Purdue University, creating a more positive impact on the business school, the university and the community as a whole. Her ultimate goal is to improve the quality of the educational experience for the students as well as improve the impact of Purdue University as a university in Indiana.
