Proper Footwear Can Help Ensure that Trick-or-Treaters Have More Fun than Frights This Halloween

Nothing can put a damper on an evening of Trick-or-Treating fun than a trip and fall, painful blisters or rub spots, sprained ankles, or worse!

"Footwear should be considered the most important part of your child's Halloween costume."

SACRAMENTO, CA, October 27, 2023 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Little ghosts, ghouls, goblins, witches, warlocks, and werewolves eagerly await Halloween and the excitement of Trick-or-Treating!

However, nothing can put a damper on an evening of Trick-or-Treating fun than a trip and fall, painful blisters or rub spots, sprained ankles, or worse. Wearing protective, supportive footwear can help prevent such injuries.

"Footwear should be considered the most important part of your child's Halloween costume," said Holly Spohn-Gross, DPM.

"Costume footwear is often made with cheap, flimsy materials that provide little support or protection for young, growing feet," says Dr. Spohn-Gross, a podiatric foot and ankle specialist and surgeon practicing in Lake Isabella, CA. "Parents should instead opt for well-made sneakers with good padding for support and thick soles to help protect the bottoms of feet from sharp objects. And, sneakers are also a great place to apply reflective tape to help increase visibility. Also, have your Trick-or-Treaters wear socks with the sneakers to help prevent sweaty feet from sliding around inside, creating friction, and causing blisters or rub spots."

Additional safety tips provided by Dr. Spohn-Gross include:
• Securely tying shoelaces.
• Ensuring that costumes are not too long or restrictive around the feet and ankles, which can pose risks of tripping and falling.
• Using face paint instead of masks, which can restrict vision.
• Enhancing Trick-or-Treaters' visibility by having them wear light colors, glow-in-the-dark colors, and or apply reflective tape.

"Trick-or-Treating can be a fun family fitness activity," says Dr. Spohn-Gross, encouraging parents to lace up their sneakers, grab a flashlight, and join in the fun.
