A professional faculty member at Washtenaw Community College in Ann Arbor, Michigan, for over 15 years, Mr. Anderson teaches first-year college students in all levels of English composition, from developmental to advanced. Experienced in instructing both in class and online instruction, his tenured background has also included teaching courses in speech, business, technical writing, and English as a second language to diverse learners.
Simultaneous teaching online courses at several other institutions since being acquired by Washtenaw Community College, Mr. Anderson taught at Wayne County Community College District in Taylor, Michigan, between 2007 and 2009, Lansing Community College in Lansing, Michigan, between 2016 and 2021, and Baker College in Owosso, Michigan, from 2014 to 2021. Now teaching solely at Washtenaw Community College, he dedicates his time to prepping for courses, developing innovative lesson plans that demonstrate realistic application of composition topics and technology integration, providing classroom instruction, grading papers, and holding office hours. Mr. Anderson notably teaches ENG 111 Composition I and ENG 226 Composition II.
Initially, Mr. Anderson sought to pursue a career in journalism, specifically with a newspaper.
However, he wound up spending a year abroad teaching in Taiwan. Upon returning to the U.S., he realized that teaching was his true calling and immersed himself in the field. During his early stages in education, Mr. Anderson garnered experience as an online instructor at the University of Phoenix and as an online program chairperson of general studies and learning site manager for ITT Technical Institute in Dearborn, Michigan.
Since joining Washtenaw Community College, Mr. Anderson successfully revamped the institution's English 111 composition course. Working alongside his team, he ensured one-on-one credit transfers to the students who desired to transfer to a four-year college, which was aimed to prevent students from repeating the same course. Mr. Anderson also developed the online ENG 111 Composition course and created the ENG 111 OER textbook.
Mr. Anderson has been involved with several nonprofit organizations. He has supported the American Cancer Society and volunteered with his local Habitat for Humanity. An alumnus of Michigan State University, Mr. Anderson earned a Bachelor of Arts in journalism in 1995 and a Master of Arts in communication and media studies in 1998. Remaining abreast in his industry, he is a professional member of the National Council of Teachers of English.
Looking toward future career goals, Mr. Anderson aims to advance in his field. He strives to pursue the technology aspect of education, specifically the delivery and learning management system. Additionally, Mr. Anderson aspires to become a valuable resource for new instructors.
