In his present role, Dr. Kolekar collaborates with fellow scientists, physicians, and pathologists to discuss patients' cases and delve into the molecular details of these cancers of note to identify markers for targeted therapies in patients with those conditions, among his other laboratory and research responsibilities. In all he has achieved, he attributes his success to the mission of the hospital, which is to advance cures and means of prevention for pediatric catastrophic diseases through research and treatment. Such an honorable mission serves as Dr. Kolekar's primary motivation for his work.

As a result of his involvement in the field, Dr. Kolekar holds membership with the American Association for Cancer Research and the International Society for Computational Biology, where he was a former member of the society's Educational and Internship Committee through which he helped provide fellowship opportunities for aspiring scientists to attend conferences and assisted laboratories in finding suitable internship candidates for their facilities.
