    BROOKLINE, MA, April 08, 2024 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Indira Narayanan, MBBS, MD, FNNF, FIAP, FNAMS, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Dr. Narayanan is a respected neonatologist, an independent consultant on global maternal and newborn health, a researcher, and an educator specialized in newborn care. Devoted to her field for over 45 years, she is currently an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Pediatrics, Division of Neonatology and at the School of Health at Georgetown University Medical Center, Washington DC. She teaches Global Newborn Health to pediatric residents, neonatal fellows and undergraduate and graduate global health students. Dr. Narayanan also commenced for the first time in the university, a short course on Global Newborn Health.

During the earlier stage of her career, Dr. Narayanan worked as a clinician chairing various neonatal intensive care units in India and was employed as faculty in facilities such as the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research, Pondicherry, University of Chennai; Kalawati Children's Hospital, Lady Harding Medical College, University of Delhi; and Moolchand Khairati Ram Hospital in the private sector in Delhi.

Among other professional accomplishments, Dr. Narayanan subsequently entered full time into the arena of global newborn health in 1999, when she was offered the lead Technical Advisor in Newborn Health through PATH in the United States Agency for International Development (USAID)/Basic Institutionalization of Child Survival (BASICS) Program for which she moved to the U.S. and worked for 10 years through two contracts. Subsequently she worked as an independent consultant in Global Maternal and Newborn Health. During the last 24 years with focus on global newborn health, she has worked in 19 countries in Africa, Asia and the LAC Region. Her experience extends working at the global, regional, and country levels in framing policies, health system strengthening, in program implementation at the community and facility levels, as well as establishing strong links between the policy development strata and health care delivery level with focus on compassionate quality of care. She has also written national strategies and action plans for newborns in countries like Ghana and Nigeria to improve the quality of newborn care.

She was invited to join the Department of Pediatrics/Division of Neonatology at Georgetown University Medical Center and Medstar Georgetown University Hospital in 2015 to expand their global health activities.

Dr. Narayanan has been passionate about her research throughout her career and has made many strides in her work. Her groundbreaking study on human milk, supported by the Indian Council of Medical Research, was the first to prove that it specifically protects against infection. It was published in the Lancet (1978 and 1984) and other journals, and cited in the Year Books of Pediatrics. Garnering a positive response, she received invitations as a visiting professor from many institutions globally. Her study was also cited in medical texts as in the well-known textbook on breastfeeding written by Ruth Lawrence, an expert in the area. She was also invited by WHO to write the first document on feeding low-birth-weight babies. As a seasoned researcher, she also contributed over 130 scholarly articles to peer-reviewed journals and has developed several documents and teaching aids in global newborn health. She also conducted studies on maternal involvement in the neonatal care unit, making her one of the pioneers in India in this area, an important predecessor to family centered care.

Civically, Dr. Narayanan has been involved with the Rotary for many years and is currently affiliated with her local branch. She is presently writing a proposal for the organization to support an international project.

In preparation for her medical career, Dr. Narayanan received a Doctor of Medicine in Pediatrics including neonatology, from Delhi University in 1970. She also received certification in biomedical research investigators and key personnel through the CITI Program. Dr. Narayanan is an elected fellow of the Indian Academy of Pediatrics, the National Neonatology Forum, and the National Academy of Medical Sciences. She is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) ICATCH Groups on Research and Quality Improvement, and among the AAP Helping Babies Survive mentors.

In light of her work on human milk and breastfeeding, Dr. Narayanan has been recognized with a Healthy Children Achievement Award, an Academic Excellence and a Service Award (USA). She received three gold medals from the Indian Academy of Pediatrics for outstanding research, and during medical education, was awarded five medals and 15 prizes for academic excellence including having achieved the first rank in all the Delhi University medical examinations and for being the valedictorian in the final year.
