IRVINE, CA, January 14, 2025 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Gordon D. McLaren, MD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Dr. McLaren, a distinguished figure in the field of hematology and oncology, has made noteworthy contributions to academic medicine through his combination of patient care, teaching and research. In 1998, he joined the UCI Medical Center as a member of the Division of Hematology/Oncology, where he served until his retirement and earned the distinction of professor emeritus. During his tenure, he was also affiliated with Veterans Affairs medical centers in Cleveland and North Dakota, as well as VA Long Beach Health Care. Prior to his time at the UCI Medical Center, he was associated with the University of North Dakota School of Medicine and Health Sciences, where he had been Chief of the Division of Hematology and Oncology, and the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.

Dr. McLaren's educational background laid a strong foundation for his future endeavors in medicine and research. He began his illustrious career after obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry from the University of Missouri in 1965. He then earned a Doctor of Medicine from Stanford University in 1970, followed by completing an internship in internal medicine at Bassett Medical Center (affiliated with Columbia University) in 1971.

Dr. McLaren's expertise in disorders of iron metabolism, including hemochromatosis and other forms of iron overload, has led to several advances in understanding the control of intestinal iron absorption and regulation of cellular iron-binding proteins. His groundbreaking research has been supported by successful acquisition of research grants, further solidifying his reputation in the medical community.

Throughout his career, Dr. McLaren has been an active member of several professional organizations, including the American Society of Hematology, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Federation for Medical Research, the Western Association of Physicians, the International BioIron Society, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He currently is on the Board of Directors of the Iron Disorders Institute and a member of the Scientific Committee of Haemochromatosis International. He has also contributed numerous articles to scientific research publications.

Dr. McLaren's dedication to his field is exemplified by his role as a past chair of the Scientific Committee on Iron and Heme for the American Society of Hematology. In recognition of his contributions, he was honored with the Distinguished Emeritus Member Award by the same organization. Supporting his professional accomplishments have been his multiple certifications, which include medical licenses in California, Ohio and Georgia, as well as certifications in internal medicine and in hematology from the American Board of Internal Medicine.

Dr. McLaren attributes much of his success to collaboration, an important value he learned early in his career. Initially conducting his research somewhat independently as a medical student, he later realized during his hematology-oncology training that working with talented individuals was crucial for exploring different aspects of his field. This collaborative approach has been instrumental in his achievements and continues to influence his ongoing involvement with colleagues.
